Heretic time. I don't own an AR am I the only one?

Dont have one, Dont want one...

Aside from all that I just dont see the need for anyone to own such a firearm. They have no practical purpose regarding private party ownership.

Wow, one of the 5th Element!

What kind of nonsense am I reading in this thread!?

The OP response--toss the Handloader issue on AR calibers in the bin--puzzles me; I keep reference materials on a lot of guns I do not own. Never know when someone--in particular my son or my cousins--might have a question.

I've owned 4 AR's, and have sold them all (technically, one never made it past the stripped lower phase). I much prefer the Sig 55X series of rifles. Not only do I prefer the aesthetics of them, but I also appreciate the Swiss attention to detail, high quality manufacturing, excellent accuracy (1 MOA as issued with Swiss GP90), and the AK-esque operating system while maintaining good ergonomics.

My two reasons to own an AR (if I owned one):

1. Civilian Marksmanship Practice (especially if you know friends or relatives eligible for military service; three 1 hour classes and a single range session of 70 rounds (10 sighters, 20 ea prone, sitting and standing) in 1966 did not make me confident in about half of the guys with whom I went through basic.

2. Design and historical collection.

Added: the phrase Heretic time should have prompted me to trot out a favorite movie line: Main Force Patrolman Charlie to MFP Roop in Mad Max: "You're blaspheming again. I don't have to work with a blasphemer." ;)

Never liked them. Don't dislike Garands but have no desire to own. Not saying I disliked AR's as much as I do the Taurus Judge but close. Have six bolt action and one lever action centerfires.

My then 15 year old son had been wanting an AR for a long time so I ordered him one for Christmas of 2012. He wanted the older style with A2 stock and 20" barrel. Once it came in he decided he wanted an M4 style and I told him too bad. Over a period of a couple of weeks I kept looking at it and it grew on me. So I ordered what my son wanted and gave it to myself for Christmas along with a Timney trigger for it. I like it quite a bit and use a brass catcher. Not sure what purpose it serves but will keep it. I have a .243 I like for varmints and predators and prefer one of my larger calibers for hogs and deer. I guess it would do the trick if my house was assaulted by a squad sized group of people it would do the trick.

And just for plain fun shooting I prefer my CZ 512 .22 WMR.

I have decided I want an AR 10 platform in .260 Remington for hogs but it will be a while before I have funds for that .

And zombies? They only occur in Haiti so my AR is useless for zombie killing.

Last and most important. My 16 year old still likes his dad and wants to hang out with him. I will shoot AR's all day every day to hang out with my kid.

Dont have one, Dont want one. Same for an M1A. I spent most of 2 tours in an asian country in the early 70's carrying something similar and among other things, i dont care to be reminded of that.
AK's belonged to the "enemy".

Sure can't agree with much there except that I was in that Asian country in 1968.

Back on topic, after the Army I rarely handled an AR-15 for 40 years (indifference, not loathing) until the election of 2008. Since then I've built four rifles plus another lower. Sure wish I'd reconnected with the AR sooner!

Yeah, I'm now a fan and exercise my right to own the AR (and AK and SKS, even though the enemy's weapons in 'Nam). I do realize most who've replied in this thread just haven't found a reason to buy an AR for themselves and are not advocating that others should not be allowed to own one.

I don't own an AR and I'm in my early twenties which really makes me stick out. It seems most people my age are obsessed with them and that's all they ever talk about. I understand the attraction buy they just aren't my thing, I much prefer bolt actions. I do plan on buying an AR eventually just so I have one rifle in that platform but its not at the top of my list.

I'm not totally sure I see the NEED for one either. But I'm building one anyway. It's interesting to look at one and see what makes them tick. I'm hoping to build a decent shooter - maybe this winter it will prompt me to go out and look for a yote.

It will never have the look of a nice model 70 to me, nor will it ever replace my big game rifle, but it's something new and different. AK's on the other hand don't really interest me.

They have no practical purpose regarding private party ownership.

That doesn't sound like someone that understands the 2nd amendment, I think I've heard Feinstein spout the same nonsense.

As for AR's, if you don't like them don't get one. However if you shoot competitively (3 gun or service rifle) and want to win then you need one, or a Sig 55x etc. Personally I like a little bit of everything, from my 19th C. 1/2 action Martini Henry in .360 no 5, the Browning 1885 in 45-70, the Sako AIII in 30-06 all the way up to my AR's and HK's.

I own a standard M1a. After shooting a TON of different semi rifles I connected with that one and feel I shoot it best.

I have nothing against the Ar15 and would equip one should my job demand it (it doesn't). Just like the Glock, I respect its history and capability, I just have no personal interest in being an owner of one.

I've owned a couple over the years, but I don't own any now and really don't have any plans to buy one at the moment. Part of it is that I don't get to shoot long guns as much as I'd like, part of it is that the safe is full, part of it is that I've become invested in other platforms and it doesn't make a lot of sense to diversify at this point.

I don't have anything against them, but I also don't feel like I'm missing out...

I don't own one. In fact I don't think I've ever even shot one. I would like to try both Service Rifle and 3 Gun matches, though, and they seem to be de rigeur in those games, at least if you want to be competitive. And of course, there's a world of difference between a National Match rifle and a 3G specialist. Guess that puts me reluctantly in the market for two of them.

I do not own one and never will. It's not about the cost (I regulary shoot at Arsenal SA M7 AKSA). While the AR can be a very accurate firearm it is one that the guys at the range seem to have the most trouble with. Constanty fiddling with them for various reasons. The AK's and Saiga firearms people simply load and shoot. No fiddling around trying to get it to work properly. My son is a retired Marine and did several tours in Iraq. The M16's had to be consantly cleaned to be reliable. A good number of the infantry he carried would pick up AK's and ammo and use them in close in encounters since they worked even when filthy.

I've had several of them over time. I enjoyed shooting them, and greatly respect the accuracy, but they just aren't very practical for what I normally do. I prefer a good sporter bolt gun or lever gun, they are far sleeker and handier to carry, simpler, and generally in more practical calibers for what I do.

When money was tight, I sold the AR I had and dont miss it. It was just a plinker, and was fun to shoot when ammo was $140-$175/1000. At this point, I'd rather have a nice light sporter bolt gun in 223 for a plnker.

I understand ARs can be had in other calibers, but the bulky nature of the gun just really doesn't apeal to me, nor do the offbeat chamberings to achieve better than 223 field performance. I liked the ones I had necause they were accurate and cheap to shoot, not because I was enthralled with the gun type. They are OK, just not for me. If I want to fool around with military type guns, 1903 Springfields get my attention far more, though when I handle one, I keep thinking about how nice it would be sporterized. :)

I don't own one myself. I do find myself wanting a semi-automatic "second amendment" rifle of some sort. I would like to find something but find myself a little torn. The guys I know that like AK's don't have any use for AR's and vice versa. I am going to try to pick up something before too long though. While I am waiting for the right financial opportunity I need to do some research on which would do better for my purposes.

They are too little to hunt with.
Oh really?? I've got one in .458 SOCOM and another wildcat .358 WSSM. The SOCOM has quite a bit more power than a .45-70. The .358 got a deer last year at 279 yards. As for accuracy... Gunpix-1.jpg Gunpix013.jpg
