I have a family member who is driving to California on I -40 all the way to take his daughter to a art school this fall. I need some suggestions on where he could leave his firearm (gun store?) before he crosses into Cali. Long trip from Arkansas and he really does not want to travel without his CCW. Anyone have any suggestions. He is leaving this Saturday.

Could just buy a CA approved gun if he doesn't already have one and lock it in the trunk at the border. Since there is a destination in CA FOPA wouldn't help much.

Oh that would work. What if he has a hauling truck or van? If he get stopped in Cali does he have to tell them he has a firearm? What kind of handguns are legal in Cali? I am sure he has one.

Just use a good locking gun case and keep it locked in the locked trunk of car.

Safest is two case's, one for guns and the other for ammunition and magazines.
Also, unload the magazines, they can be construed a loaded firearm by a zealous peace officer. (has been beaten, but not worth the hassle)

We're not as bad as New York, and you'll be left alone unless reckless.

Don't worry about the California approved list, that is just for buying and selling.
Just don't bring automatics, explosive devices or suppression devises into CA

What about when he arrives on campus? I know it's currently illegal in my state to have a gun on campus PERIOD - locked up or not (that changes soon) so it's worth checking that out for Kali.

How long is he staying in California?

A safe-deposit box in a local branch of his bank, if one is available, is an option for the duration of his stay.

I think you need to go a little farther than that! You need to obey their magazine capacity limits, evil feature limits, etc. (I'm assuming they have a mag cap limit. It is California!)

2 days at most. He will be in a van. States he will take a wheel gun.

States he will take a wheel gun.

That covers all the gun problems - charged speed loaders have not been reported to confuse nosy-Parkers about 'loaded gun'.

Otherwise, as already noted, unloaded in a completely enclosing locked case.

Transporting a handgun properly locked up onto a school campus is ambiguous for K-12, but forbidden as to colleges and universities, public or private. Penal Code 626.9(i)
(i) Notwithstanding Section 12026, any person who brings or
possesses a firearm upon the grounds of a campus of, or
buildings owned or operated for student housing, teaching,
research, or administration by, a public or private university
or college, that are contiguous or are clearly marked
university property, unless it is with the written permission
of the university or college president, his or her designee, or
equivalent university or college authority, shall be punished
by imprisonment in the state prison for one, two, or three
years.
(12026 is the old designation for the 'unloaded locked case' transport law, renumbered in 2012.)

Here's the Office of the Attorney General official take on traveling with firearms in California:
http://oag.ca.gov/firearms/travel

Although they don't say it, I would suggest that anyone traveling temporarily in California NOT bring magazines that can contain more than 10 rounds, just to be on the safe side. If you must, I would keep them locked in a case separately from the gun.

There is no requirement in California to notify an officer of carriage of a gun during a traffic stop.

Just FYI, a first offense for concealed carry without a permit in California is a misdemeanor.

Just noticed the part about a revolver. Magazine problems don't apply!

Looks like the only problem is the campus thingy any suggestions? I guess he could park of campus property but, that would be a hassle i assume.

Okay, here's the law citation on that part (section 626.9):
http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=pen&group=00001-01000&file=626-626.11

Section 626.9 states an exemption to the Gun-Free School Zone Act:
(c) (2) When the firearm is an unloaded pistol, revolver, or other
firearm capable of being concealed on the person and is in a locked
container
or within the locked trunk of a motor vehicle.
This section does not prohibit or limit the otherwise lawful
transportation of any other firearm, other than a pistol, revolver,
or other firearm capable of being concealed on the person, in
accordance with state law.
[bold added for clarity]

I am not a lawyer, but this section seems pretty clear to me to say that transporting an unloaded revolver locked in a box within the van should be legal. I wouldn't leave it there overnight, but it seems legal.

Nplant's post seems pretty straightforward.

I'd just like to add, that is a LOOOONG drive. I took I-40 from Little Rock to the SHOT Show a couple years ago. On the plus side, until you get to California, it's a pretty gun-friendly trip.

Yeah lonooong drive. He will be by himself on the way back. How far is the grand canon if they want to visit on the way out and where is the best exit to take off !-40.

It's a beautiful drive through the Arizona Free State.
1) Be sure to gas up in Kingman; I get off at Beale Street. The price difference is huge!
2) Stop at Needle Mountain Road (along I-40) to disarm before entering Cali.
3) Unload your revolver, lock it up in the trunk, you will be fine. Drive the speed limit.
4) Where is the school? If you have never been here much, there are some of the world's best places to visit, despite our politicians views. The vast majority of folks are friendly, and the geographic wonders abound. PM me if you want some suggestions.

That is in a decent part of Los Angeles County. Although it is quite warm in the summer and Fall, there is much close by, all within easy driving distance. It is also a more conservative area of So Cal (if such a place could be labeled), and generally pretty clean. I would be comfortable with my own daughter attending classes there, FWIW.

If I remember right, the Grand Canyon is about an hour and a half, each direction, out of the way. The Hoover Dam is about the same.

I believe Gunsite is a little closer....

Two days means a motel - use one with an in-room safe and out gun in there while going to campus. I am NOT advocating breaking any laws, but why do so many think that they will be arrested immediately as if the state border has some sensitive sensor? Follow the rules but don't be so paranoid - it is California, not Syria..........

Gunsite is a bit closer, down HWY 89 towards Prescott, and would be a dandy good one week stop on the way back. Accommodations in Chino Valley are now abundant.
There are plenty of good motels right near the campus (by the OP's destination). Drive with manners, don't speed, and you will not draw any attention. I was stationed there (in that neighborhood) for three years; the folks who find trouble are usually those who seek it out.
Relax, enjoy the visit. If they are going in the fall, an alternative to the Grand Canyon would be a trip down the California Big Sur Coast, with a stop-over at San Simeon for a Hearst Castle tour.

Thanks everyone for the info. I had to laugh at the comment above cause my relative asked me if he had to go through some type of border check to get into Kali. Kali does not have a good reputation outside of its borders.

^^^^If he is paranoid, he can detour through Oatman (another great spot) and cross up by the casino near Fort Mohave, and avoid the agricultural checkpoint on I-40. It is an easy route, and won't take much time. I have used that route to avoid traffic in the past. BTW, most traffic sails right through, nobody cares where you are going to or coming from.

So the is really a check point on I-40. You have to be kidding???
