I am curious to hear your feedback if you have bought an AR based 7.62 lately, say in the last 5 years.

Please vote in the poll if you have, and comment on your positives and negatives please.

Thanks!

I bought a DPMS LR-308 Classic back in '08. It was very accurate, but was just way too heavy for my purposes... I was wanting more of a battle rifle. I bought it back before I understood the nuances of barrel profile and how it can affect weight. It got sold and replaced by an M1A pretty quickly.

Just this year I got a LR-308 Oracle and swapped out the barrel, handguard, gas block, and stock assembly to build basically my ideal battle rifle. It shoots pretty well, though I've had a couple failure to eject malfunctions in the first 150 rounds. I think I need to turn the gas up a little more. I haven't really put it through the paces enough yet to know whether it will be reliable enough for me without additional upgrades. I am going to be using it in some cross country run n gun competitions over the next year, so hopefully that will give me a better idea of whether this thing can be trusted as my main battle rifle. Here it is:

And here is my old Classic that I ended up selling:

OP do you mean 7.62NATO/308 only, or are other .30caliber AR's part of the question?

Although I haven't owned an AR10 yet, I plan to buy a Smith&Wesson AR10 sometime in the very near future. But I have owned a PSA 7.62x35 (300Blackout) AR15 last year that was sold before the panic. it was an excellent rifle but I just was not able to acquire enough ammo to shoot it. I'm currently also building another 300BLK AR, but ammo is what's holding me back until I start reloading.

I have a Remington R25 7.62x51 and it needed upgrade parts costing 80% above retail price to get it to where It would shoot to my standards. After optics I easily spent double the retail price.
I also built a 7.62x39 on a m&p 15 lower and a 16" ard barrel. The gun runs great with cheap Russian ammo and holds about 2 moa with a weaver kaspa 1.5-6x32. It is a blast to shoot and very economical. I will also use it for spot and stalk hog hunting. It is threaded 5/8x24 for a 7.62 can.

I've bought a few AR's in 308 since 08.
DPMS:
LR-308 24" stainless barrel- accurate fun and my first 308 AR. Sold the upper for a Tac-20 upper. It was fun and accurate. Had a brain fart and sold it. Bought an AP4. Liked it but just not what I wanted in a 308. Sold it and bought...
RRA predator in 308 with an after market muzzle break. I think Smith Enterprises. I loved this rifle. It shot better than their accuracy guarantee. The trigger was all that and a bag of chips IMO. Not too heavy for me either. Idk the actual weight but it wasn't over bearing for me. I had a Burris Fullfield 2 4.5-14 scope on it with XTR rings and a knock off bipod. It was perfect for me. Unfortunately it was stolen:banghead::fire:

Bought a DPMS LR 308B about 5 years ago.
Fitted with 18" Cryo bull barrel, JP trigger & adjustable gas block. Now fitted with Magpul handgrip & Weaver grand Slam scope.
Rifle is accurate, reliable and durable. It has never jammed, failed, broken or caused any problems at all. Shoots sub MOA with decent ammo.
Well worth its price.

I bought a POF P308 about four years ago. I would have preferred a standard Picatinny rail on the receiver and a forend tube more like the LaRue OBR but other than that it's a great rifle. It's accurate and reliable and has an integral ambi bolt release which is very convenient when shooting prone.

I have a R25 and after sending it back 3 times for chamber polish recrown ejector work and a couple of other things I shot 3 shots onto one hole and the other two 1/2 inch away. what did you have to have done to it and if you were patient and kept sending it back it would have shot without you spending money

DPMS LR308, 18" barrel A3 with FA and dust cover. With the suppressor, it is either a subsonic single shot or standard velocity 22 loud semi-auto. All in all I am very satisfied with the way it functions, just a little put off by the weight of it.

300 AAC Blackout (its a 7.62 projectile :) )
in a 16" DSA carbine upper & 10.5" home built AR pistol.

Bought a DPMS LR308 AP4 about a year and a half ago. After I bought it I sold my 20" Bushmaster BAR10.
I really like this little rifle, did a lot of hunting with it last year, its definitely a pig killer!

Put a deposit down for one of these over a year ago, still waiting but they say I should have it soon. I hope to have it before hunting season!

Rra lar-8

I picked up a Rock River Arms LAR-8 in 7.62 Nato a few years ago. Uses the same magazine as my DSA FAL. I still have a cheap 4x optic on it. It shoots way better than me. Also eats any steel case ammo, which is nice. I can save my Radway Green, Malaysian and S. Afrikaan for my FAL.

Very interesting replies per DPMS....excellent!

Toss up for me btween RRA and Armalite, but I'll look closer at the DPMS 18" variant. Thanks guys...

I voted RRA (LAR-8 standard A4 with ambi safety, ambi charging handle and flip front sight), but I don't have it in hand yet. :( Been on order since mid-December. Of course, the LAR-8 had long lead times before December so I'm sure that has only gotten worse...

At least I have plenty of mags for it!

I've used this DPMS LR308 deer hunting the last two seasons. Added a Springfield Sniper 1st Gen scope. Its scary accurate.

Retired three bolt guns because of it. I handload 168g gamekings with 44g of WC844. Will absolutely shoot MOA.

I'm hoping to use my POF P308 on some pigs this year. I zeroed the scope yesterday with Remington 150gr CLUB loads and plan on trying some Barnes Hog Hammer 168gr TSX today to see how they shoot at 100 yards.

Since I didn't buy an AR chambered in 7.62 in the past 5 years I didn't take the poll.

I bought my AT10T maybe 15 or so years ago. Like any rifle I built it up with a specific purpose in mind. I did not plan to ever use it as a hunting or general purpose rifle. I have other rifles better suited for hunting and better designed with hunting in mind than my AR. Had I wanted to hunt with it then it would have more closely resembled some of the fine examples of the rifles posted and used for hunting. I wanted at the time a match quality target rifle and believe me the below pictured rifle would suck for hunting, however it did make a real fine match target rifle on the bright side.

This brings us to what the intended application is for the rifle?

In my opinion you buy or build a rifle with an intended application in mind. That applications determines what the finished rifle will have for characteristics including things like weight, barrel, sights and the list goes on. You can build a hunting rifle, a target rifle or try for a hybrid offering a little of both worlds.

Just My Take

Intended purpose will be for target shooting and stand hunting. We have a 1000m field in the middle of our land where we have the tower stands.

Leaning one target 7.62, would love to have the free $$ for KAC etc., but no go.

Interested in the Armalites but, if the DPMSs are just as pleasing, weighing in less, that may be where it goes to and build on it later if I want.
