Shooting my Series 70 GCNM this past Saturday in a match. I had several failure to chamber fully, could be time for a good cleaning. What concerns me is that 6-8 times when this happened, the hammer would fall when I pulled the trigger. This was with the slide perhaps 1/8 to 3/16 inch from being closed. I could then recock the hammer, tap the back of the slide and be back to shooting. What direction should I look? I bought the pistol used, with very few rounds through it. As far as I know it is stock in all regards. I have fired perhaps 1500 rounds of 230 RN lead, loaded to around 750 fps.

Are you saying you have shot about 1500 rounds and you haven't cleaned it yet?
That would be my first step. I clean after shooting 100 rounds. Actualy I would do a complete detail strip and clean everything. Then put it back together. Its easy, many videos on youtube.

That's a very long run without cleaning for a 1911. The chamber may be gummed up, as suggested above. Agree with the detailed cleaning, or at least a long warm ultrasonic bath.

Very first thing would be to clean it. I usually don't go over 750-1,000 rds or things get slow and hesitant.

Then look up Wolff Gunsprings and get yourself a new recoil spring! (Or better, a full kit.) Who knows how long its been since that spring was changed. Hesitation returning to battery often means your recoil spring is worn out. They should be changed at least every 3,000 rds. or so.

As to why the hammer will fall? Not sure. But the good news is the gun works right and doesn't allow the firing pin to be hit if the hammer does fall with the slide out of battery!

Thanks for the replies so far. Yes, I agree a good cleaning is in order. Yes, they are my reloads. But the original question remains.

Why would the hammer fall when the trigger is pulled before the gun is in battery?

Most of the time the hammer will follow after the slide, if the center leaf spring that produces pressure to the disconnector has lost some of its set, try and bend the center leaf forward a bit and see if that fixes your hammer following problem, always follow the path of least resistance, good luck.

shoot safe, shoot straight and have fun
