Unfamiliar to me - 9mm Carbine or rifle

Hmmm. A 9mm AR. That could be interesting. All I'd need is an upper.

And a magazine block. If you are going to be switching uppers you want one that goes in from the bottom without needing to remove the bolt hold open.

I like this one:
http://www.brownells.com/rifle-part...n-block-prod1548.aspx?avs|Make_3=AR-15zz1zzM4

It has a roller and as set screw to wedge it in so it doesn't come out with the magazine. Easy to remove by backing off the set screw when you want to go back to 5.56 or other AR upper calibers.

Edit: Someone earlier mentioned the need for a heavier 9mm buffer and often a 5.56 will work fine with it in, and you may need a new hammer if yours is "notched". But you may have noticed you could about buy a HiPoint carbine for what the 9mm mag block costs :(

9mm benefits more form a longer barrel than most other handgun rounds, 100 yards is not problem, I'd consider 200 yards a practical limit for target shooting.

I also have the CX4 in 9mm, which is fun to shoot and very accurate up to 100 yards. The trigger leaves much to be desired though- I'm not sure how it measures pound-wise, but it is extremely heavy, with a long reset. The hammer is plastic, therefore it requires a strong hammer spring to insure consistent hammer strikes.

I have a Beretta 92A1 which is the finest pistol I own but I don't think I'm going to pay that much for a pistol caliber carbine. I need a 9mm carbine of some sort though. I just finished loading 350 rounds on my Lee Classic Turret Press. LOL.

I have a Hi Point carbine that my wife has claimed. It shoots all day long without a malfunction. In fact, I have bought several Hi Point pistols over the years. People buy them new and don't realize they have a lifetime warranty and the problem with the gun is the magazine is rubbing the slide. The magazine was the problem with the carbine when I bought it. For $25 to $50 a Hi point is an awesome pistol/carbine.

In comparison to the Beretta storm the Hi Point is better gun all the way around. The local sheriffs department bought 2 storms. Both are in the junk pile. They shoot just fine but the plastic sights don't get along with the gun racks in the squad cars. If a gun can't stand the ride in a foam cushioned gun rack it won't last a week in my toolbox. The Hi point carbine stood at least two years in the tool box. Since my wife claimed the Hi Point I found a Maverick 88 for the toolbox.

If you're back packing, I don't think there is any choice but the Kel-Tec S2K.

Pick a mag flavor that matches, and go for it.

Compact enough to fit in a computer shoulder bag, motorcycle saddlebags, or a backpack.

Mine eats a steady diet of steel Russian 9mm, and digests them just fine.

Only problem right now is availability and price.

That is true. KelTec has an MSRP of $409. I wouldn't pay a dime over that. But I have a KelTec SU16C which is terrific scabbard carry on an external frame pack.
I've shot the Sub 2000 before but wasn't heading in that direction at the time. But I remember being either impressed or largely amused at the time. I'm going to keep my eyes open for one.

There is always the Calico 9mm carbine or pistol with the 100 round mag. back when I had a FFL, I sold a few of them to some coworkers - back them they were about $200; now a little more

Another one no one has mentioned is Thureon Defense. Their rifles seem pricey, and I don't know anything about them, except that they too, make a 9mm carbine.

I have got a couple of the Beretta CX4s- one for the 92 and one for the PX4-and the Ruger PC9. All have been extremely reliable, but since the wife likes the PX4 better, the PC9 just sits in the safe and will probably be sold.

CX4 fits me best carbine-wise due to my size - good engineering (noted above), easy to hold tightly, etc. Wish HK had made a USC in 9mm but the .45 suits me just fine in that fine weapon.

The local sheriffs department bought 2 storms. Both are in the junk pile. They shoot just fine but the plastic sights don't get along with the gun racks in the squad cars. If a gun can't stand the ride in a foam cushioned gun rack it won't last a week in my toolbox.

The CX4 Storm most definitely does NOT have "plastic sights". It has plastic ears that are up around the sights...sights which are very much metal and robust.

Danez,
Keep an eye on LGS or mail order places that deal with police trade-ins. That's how I found my 2nd one.
And Samurai (post 36) may be selling his...

OP - don't discount the CX4 yet. Keep an eye out for used ones. While not at the price point of the Keltec, it's a fine carbine and (for me) fits right.

You will need the upper AND a magazine block.
