I am picking up a Model 1910 tomorrow and have been researching quite a bit about the 401 WSL. I know ammo is tough to find and expensive (both original and new). There are several methods from buying factory brass and expensive bullets (when available) to forming your own. One method in particular has caught my attention. This method involves annealing the case and using a tapered expander to neck up 7.62x39 brass to fit a .406" bullet. Then using a bullet reducing die on .410" .41 magnum bullets to reduce them to .406". Does anyone have experience using this method? How were your results? Even if you only used the brass I am interested. This method appeals to me because of the price and availability of components.

Now to the second part, I reload already but the cost to get setup to reload (dies, plugs, reducer die, brass and bullets) will be close to $250. I don't want to invest that up front if the rifle has issues and I would like to test run 5-10 rounds first. If you have any cartridges and don't mind parting with them I would be willing to pay a fair price. I checked all the usual sites but there seems to be a premium placed on the cartridge boxes. PM me and let me know. Thanks

Brian23: Check out this web site. This guy uses 7.62X39 mm cases reformed to .401WSL and uses .41 Magnum dies to load:

Lee Precision has a die to reduce .410 bullets to .406 at a reasonable cost ($35+- when I last checked ). I made a push through reducing die on my lathe to squeeze .358 bullets down to .352 for My Model 07 .351 WSL which works well in a Rock Chucker press.

Thanks for the info. It looked like they used a lathe. That's the first mention of that when using 7.62x39 cases that I have seen. I think I posted some pictures of the rifle. I am having a bear of a time getting the rear sight removed. Its got a hundred years of crust under it and it won't budge. Any suggestions?

I would soak the rear sight with kroil or any good penetrating oil and let it sit overnight. Gently tap it with a brass punch or brass rod from left to right. It should come out.

I hope I can help. I've been reloading 401SL for a few years now. You can pick up 401 Brass from Buffalo Arms. They are currently out of stock now, but in my experience, they get stocked up frequently. http://www.buffaloarms.com/401_WSL_Reloading_Brass_it-157164.aspx?CAT=3838

Midway occasionally has 401 Brass from Quality Cartridge. Put yourself on the product notification email list. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/55...g-brass-401-winchester-self-loading-box-of-20
Note: You will have to use separate shell holders if you have both the Buffalo Arms and Quality Brass.

.406 Jacketed bullets can be ordered from Hawk or Buffalo Arms http://www.hawkbullets.com/Pricelist.htm

I like the 250g jacketed bullets over 23-24g 4227. I've gone up to 24.5g of 4227 but the brass was getting dinged up.

I patiently scoured Google until I found a set of used 401sl dies.
Some people have used 41 Mag dies, but I would be concerned about case tension.
Here are a few other resources.

PM me if you need more info

Thanks for all the info. I was unaware how often buffalo arms would restock. After all my research the best way at this point seems to be the Quality Cartridge brass, Redding Dies and Hawk Bullets.

The restoration is beautiful. I am taking baby steps right now and have the broken rear sight soaking in penetrating oil. I just bought 20 200 grain cartridges (old factory) on Gunbroker for $36+ shipping Once I get a replacement rear sight I will shoot it. I have torn it down and cleaned it and everything functions as it should. The bore is excellent and bright. If I can hit a paper plate at 50 yards I'll be happy and invest in the dies, brass and bullets.

Brian,
Midway is expecting the Quality 401 brass to arrive on 9-28-13. The last time I ordered, they were gone by noon PST. You can back order them now and save yourself the trouble.

I was able to use an RCBS #3 shell holder with these. There were a tad tight the first time, but subsequent reloads were fine.

The broken rear site was removed and a replacement fitted. Thanks for the input the penetrating oil overnight did the trick. It was very nerve wracking. Ammo is on its way.
