Hey friends and neighbors,

My current inventory in semiautos:
.45 XDs
.45 FNP45
.45 1911

Obviously I have an affection for .45 acp as it is currently my only semiauto caliber. But all the ammo shortages and whatnot have made me wonder if I wouldn't be well off to have a little diversity in my inventory, namely the 9mm Luger.

Why the need? Well, I don't need it, but I do enjoy shooting. So when one cartridge is hard to find, I like to have another one to shoot.

I'm the type that likes to save, and just get the one that I want. I don't like to settle. I've had my eye on the Sig X-Five All Around, but the real killer is the price. It looks like I won't walk out of that purchase for under $1400, and the All Around is the base model. Nowhere to go but up, and I'm not really interested in the SAO counterparts. I like my 1911 for that.

I struggle with the price when I really don't need the gun. I have no doubt that I'd like it, and if I had the money, I'd not worry so much, but I'll need to save awhile for this one, as my bargain with myself is no new money being spent on guns until my student loan is paid for. Trading is ok, but I have no guns I want to trade away at the current time. I'm not in a hurry, I'm just weighing my options.

So, to any X-Five owners out there, are they worth the price? Do you notice that much of a difference in the accuracy, balance, ergonomics, reliability, durability, and overall shootability to warrant the price tag? I'm considering the 5.25" XDm, and a CZ SS 75B as well, both of which I can get a hold of for around $800 OTD. (Way more appealing price) I do prefer an all stainless gun for range fun. It may also serve some light, open carry duty and HD roles. I'm also wondering how it compares with the more stripped down 226 models like the Elites, or even the Equinox or Tac Opps. Not jabbing at those models as I think they are fine weapons as well. Or maybe I should just look into getting a 1911 in 9mm sinc eI enjoy and am familiar with that platform. Perhaps a bobtail or commander size.

Feel free to chime in with any alternative steel guns you have experience with. And please no "Get a GLOCK and be done with it." comments, "Get a revolver." comments, since I have 5 revolvers already, or "Get a .40 S&W" comments, since I had one and got rid of it. Oh yeah, I do not compete (well, I compete with myself), so that isn't a factor. I also prefer to buy new.

By the way, I have handled the CZ SS 75B, and was quite impressed with the trigger.

Thanks for the input all.

I have an X-5 All Around, and it is the nicest, softest shooting, most precise 9mm I own. It is a completely different gun than the P226 Elites, even though it does have "P226" on the slide. The "X" series really are a "different breed of SIG". Mine has visited Bruce Gray's Secret Volcano Lab and has a beautiful trigger in both DA and SA. It is hard to miss with that gun.

The pistol is worth every bit of $1400, so long as you have the $1400 to spend.

As a caution, there have been some reports of the 9mm All Around suffering from extraction problems because of the placement of the extractor in the breech face. Bruce has come up with an alternative extractor for the guys who shoot the X-5 in competition. I haven't experienced the problem (although he did the prep work on my slide while it was at the shop), but you should know that there is the possibility of developing the problem.

Kodiak,
You will get your money's worth, if accuracy and precision are above all. It is too nice to carry around, as the name seems to suggest. You can save a little by choosing an SAO X Five, which is just as precise, just lacks the DA option you'd likely never need. And in competition you won't have to fire the first shot in DA.

I've owned my Allround for several years. I did look at the other X-5 versions before deciding on the Allround. The single action versions do have better, match type, triggers. Otherwise, I could see no difference in barrel/slide/frame fit or overall quality. I'd owned quite a few SIG variations over the years, and actually went with the Allround because it was the most similar to my previous P226 SIGs. For example, I preferred the non-extended controls, short trigger and SRT for my X-5 and was able to install these regular P226 parts on my Allround.

Much as I enjoy the X-5, I enjoy shooting good quality 9MM 1911s even more. I admit I'm basically a 1911 guy. The Dan Wsson PM9 and STI Trojan are very nicely fitted, accurate and reliable 9MMs at prices similar to, or less than in the case of the Trojan, the X-5 Allround....ymmv

BTW, even though the X-5 and 1911 9MM weights are similar, the X-5 is still the softest shooting 9MM of any kind that I have ever owned. I think some of that has to be due to the X-5's recoil spring/buffer system...

Is it worth it?
That accuracy costs money. How much you are willing to part with for a more accurate gun is up to you.
I have twice as much in to some of my full customs. to me, an All Round is a bargain:what:

Right, that's why I'm asking. Does the benefits of the gun at least equal the higher price tag is my concern. I'd hate to spend the money and find out it really isn't any better than say, a $800 gun. But several people are giving it the thumbs up and saying it is worth it.

Well right man, I know there are way higher end 9mm's out there. But some of us don't have that kind of money sitting around.

Yeah, I've heard that too.

How do you mean? Quality, accuracy, recoil impulse?

I love my SIGs: 226 custom, and a 1911 TO TR.

A buddy works in a gun shop and keeps telling me when an Allaround comes in, .." you gotta come handle this thing..", and then they're gone. I don't go for the same reason I do not test ride the new Ducatis.

If it was my $1400 for a 9mm, it would go to the STI 2011 Tactical; 4" or 5", take your pick.

I have a P226 in 9mm and it is a great shooter. You should look into the H&K USP. I have the full size and I carry it. It's a little big, but it is reliable and accurate. It will cycle and ammo I load into the mag a after several thousand rounds (about 6k) I have NEVER and a ftf or fte.

I have one.
It is definately worth the money. Not a carry pistol by any means but one heck of a shooter. If it had rail, it would be my night stand as well for sure.

Yes the X-Five is a heck of a gun. X-Fives are claimed by SIG to be able to shoot groups under two inches at 50 yards with the right ammo.

Well, not too many responses, but the X-Five isn't exactly a common gun. Sounds like for range work, the X-Five is indeed worth the price.

Guess I'll save my money.

...

I shot a friends, twice, and both times, 2 weeks apart, it was the best, softest, "balanced", most accurate 9mm via the SAO trigger is tops, IMHO, of any gun sold over the counter "at its price". Not to mention the sights they come with.

Holes within holes, almost scary like, "did I miss the entire target?"

No.. lol just making a dime's size hole bigger into a quarter thru 2 mags worth.

When my ship comes in and I'm not at the airport, that is the gun I want more than any other.

I say get it and pay for a lifetime investment in pure delight without need to add or change anything.

Believe me, those memories are engrained within me - I will get one, a must.

ommv, but not many :)

I have a somewhat special "226": a commorative made for the 75th anniversary of the Texas Department of Public Safety (the Texas State Police). When I worked there, I was eligible to buy one, and did so, as it was an insane bargain. It's all stainless, with black finish on the frame, intricately engraved s.s. slide, big beavertail, .357 SIG caliber, and single action only. It was built on an X-5 chassis.

It is incredibly accurate. I am not a great nor consistent shooter, but that pistol has fired 5-shot 2" groups, even with me shooting, at 50 yards. The ergonomics are also quite superior to that of any 1911 I have owned or fired, and the fit and finish is really, really good. Despite its 45+ ounce weight, it is my carry gun when clothing limitations don't preclude that, because it is that good, and the 357 SIG ballistics make it effective for self defense (At TXDPS, the troopers always said it's like "a bolt of lightning", and the perp goes down every time). In other words, great appearance, finish, accuracy, recoil management, and stopping power all in one handgun.

Another SIG, much smaller, also SAO (a P938 9mm pocket size pistol that handles +p+ ammo), handles the days when clothing has to be super light.

I have admired the X Five Tactical (SAO, light weight) for my application; IDPA.

I can't visualize a use for the All Around, a DA/SA target pistol does not seem much help to me. If I were going to splurge, with no IDPA weight limit, it would be the L1 or Competition.
