New Miami Classic--strap won't reach

I replaced my well-worn Miami Classic with a new Miami Classic II. I wasn't expecting the change in the thumb break. The strap is about 1/8" too short, even when I jam the 1911 in as far as it can possibly go. I even took out the rubber bushing for the tension screw to maybe give it more travel, but it was in as far as it would go.

I remember having to stretch the strap on my first Miami Classic, but I don't remember it being this tight. I don't know if it's going to reach without using some sort of leather stretcher or water or something.

Has anyone else had problems with the new (it could be ten years old, for all I know) design of the thumb strap?

All Galco holsters with safety straps and thumb breaks are designed to carry 1911-style pistols with the "hammer down, chamber empty." Galco 1911 fit holsters that are "open top" (no safety strap and no thumbreak)are designed to accommodate 1911's in all safe "conditions" specified by the firearm manufacturer.

Of course I'm not sure this would have any affect on your inability to snap it, as I'd think the strap would be longer if designed for hammer down carry.

That's right. With the hammer cocked, the snaps are within 1/8" or so of being able to be connected. With the hammer down, it's more like 1/4" +.
 
I figured he might have a problem snapping it with his gun C&L'd, because the snap would be going more diaganal than straight across the hammer.
 
Is it possible you have a gun/holster incapability?

Do you have a SIG 1911 with the non-traditional slide? Do you have a railed 1911? Do you have a holster for a 4" 1911 (Kimber, Springfield, Wilson compacts) and a true Commander (4 1/4" barrel) gun? If no to all of those, it's either see if it stretches a bit or send it back.
 
Get running water til it's real hot, then hold the strap parts under it for just a couple seconds.
It's not the water that will do the trick as much as the heat.....it will stretch as much as 1/2" no problem...stretch them over the gun til you can snap them together....no harm to the leather..apply what ever product you have that calls itself "leather conditioner" when it's dry...you're good to go.
 
I stretched it like crazy today, and got it to snap. Not easily, but I'll keep stretching.

I'll try the hot water. I like to have the strap just a tiny bit loose, as it makes re-holstering and re-snapping easier.
 
+1 on hot water.

Put three or four layers of blue masking tape over the back of the gun and leave the gun it in it to dry overnight.

It will be Goldie-Locks perfect when it dries.
