I feel I can resist the temptation no longer, I need (WANT) a
9.3x62 Mauser. I have a German 98k (long action) rifle and am
looking for a barrel to go with this action.
As I have three other Yugo 98's (intermediate actions) which
are not suitable for the conversion, I'm asking for suggestions on
barrels for the 98.

I have a good Pac Nor .308 barrel.
They make a .366" 12 twist, will thread for Mauser, and have the 9.3x62 reamer.

I am sure there are other brands, but Pac Nor did all right for me.

How much of the installation do you plan to do yourself?

9.3x62

Hey Jim, I would like to buy the barrel and install it myself,
ream it myself, etc ... I have a Spanish Mauser (my son's),
that will be my trial install, small ring 7x57 mauser. :uhoh:

Get a Husqvarna Sporting Rifle off Gunbroker. Cheaper than parts and labor, done right, very accurate, old world craftsmanship.

If you are going to load for it, you won't load it hot, it gets near 375 H&H territory really quick.

A 286 gr Nosler Partition bullet at 2200 fps is all you need for almost any game, almost any where.

All of this is true, however, there is no fun in that. Nothing is more satisfying than building your own sporter with your own hands.

build it !!

jimmy ray is right, building the rifle is all part of the culmination of the dream,:D
build it, shoot it, tune it, hunt with it, go to the dark continent, hunt with it some more, the "circle of life" (for the gun!).
It sounds "corny" I know, but I am a "Gun Nut", sorry -- "Firearms Enthusiast"!!!
This is all the "Dream of a Lifetime" for me, and I will probably sell off a few guns to fund this project,
and sell off my boat to fund the trip! I'm not getting any younger, and want to do this while I can still physically do it!

Also another question;
with my 7-7/8" (stock) magazine box/trigger guard assembly will the 9.3x62 fit ok?
or do I need to get an altered mag box to accommodate that round.

It will depend some on the bullet used. A standard M98 magazine will handle 3.25" COAL as a rule. The 286gr Nosler Partition recommended COAL is 3.228". Some bullets need more and some need less.
It's something that you can determine as needed.

should I go with a medium weight sporter contour? or heavy sporter contour?

It depends, are you going to carry it over hill and dale, or will you be using blinds or stands?
The extra weight of course helps control recoil some, but if you're in decent physical shape, it won't matter too much.
If you're going to walk the mountains, the lighter weight will help.

You might want to check out Shilen barrels. they are about the same price as pac-nor but have been around longer. also they are less expensive than Lothar-walther. I would go with a heavy sporter weight barrel for a 9.3mm. I know they sell finished barrels and barrel blanks.
