Does anyone have the skinny on the quality of CMMG upper AR15 receivers? My local gun store is selling complete CMMG uppers for $545 before tax. What are your thoughts?

CMMG is good quality. Apparently went through some growing pains in '08ish and also introduced a bargin bin rifle selection that was completely hit or miss and a lot of folks have confused their bargin bin crap shoots for their actual rifles. I have been using one of their 16" mid length uppers for a few years now (back when they were the cats meow/flavor of the month) and have had no issues with it.

That's a good price for their so-called "LE" uppers that have WASP (Melonite) treated 1:9 twist bbls. It's a great price if it's one of their chrome lined uppers with the 1:7 twist cold hammer forged bbl. Either one is a solid upper.

CMMG component quality is very good, and their build quality is also very good. PSA has slightly better components for similar and sometimes lower prices. Overall, CMMG is still one of the best brands for quality to price ratio.

CMMG Quality

Not apples to apples here, but I purchased a dedicated .22 LR CMMG upper about 2 years ago. 18" bbl. Everything stainless I could get. Put it on a RRA lower w/ match trigger, mounted a decent 6.5 X 20 scope on it and proceeded to shoot 4" groups at 25 yards, tried some of every brand of .22 ammo Cabela's had in stock, including match, with no improvement. Put it in a Bore Store in the safe and that's where it remains. Not a CMMG fan here.

Winchester 59, did you contact CMMG? If your dedicated .22 LR upper from them is grouping that poorly then there's surely a problem. I'd give them a chance to make it right.

Agreed. My CMMG dedicated .22LR upper (on a PSA lower) is the most accurate and reliable semi-auto rimfire rifle I've ever owned.

I had one of their M4-LE rifles about 3 or so years ago. My first AR. I jad an issue with the bolt blowing ring and freezing up the gun. CMMG fixed it under warranty with a quick turn around time.

I have the whole rifle, 16" CHF LE carbine, for over a year. Machining, finish, quality are all 1st class. With x4 scope of the bench I can shoot 1.5 moa with American Eagle 55gr ammo. Never any failures of any kind. They sell a lot of rifles that you hear little about. Happy owners don't bitch.

Some years back (4? 5?) I bought a CMMG complete flat-top upper, no sights, lightweight 20" slow twist as a dedicated jackrabbit and coyote shooter on top of a Colt lower. With a Weaver K-4 on top (from my wild-animal box of "stuff") I easily get just inside one MOA.

my CMMG .22 upper will shoot one hole gps. all day long at 50yrds. with CCI ammo ...great .22 ...don't know anything about the CF

I had one that was crap. Barrel didn't shoot well, and the BCG is of sub standard quality. Particularly annoying was the gas key not being staked properly so it would work loose with some frequency.

Also the M4 feed ramps were not cut very well, and then were also done after anodizing so the surface of the ramps is soft and the geometry is off of spec.
