I am currently using a rider policy from State Farm to cover firearms. It is very expensive. I looked at the insurance that the NRA endorses and it is not much cheaper. I found two alternatives. Eastern Insurance through Historic Firearms and Collectibles Insurance. Is anyone familiar with these? Are they legit when paying claims? I don't care to give a list of my serial numbers as long as a company pays claims. I have a safe, but would like extra protection.

I have a rider on my policy specifically identifying my guns. The only negative to this process is the serial numbers are recorded. That said, my insurance agent is a fellow shooter and understands insuring firearms. I don't find my policy to be that expensive - it is about half that of the NRA policy. The guns are insured for a stated value, not replacement value, since may of them cannot be replaced on the new market.

Shop around for an agent with firearms knowledge. It helped me a lot.

Eastern Insurance

aka Historic Firearms. In Mass. Talk to Jack.

Good policy, usually no serials.

I insure with about a one gun deductible.

I have mine insured through Eire Insurance, who also has my homeowners insurance and car insurance. I was more concerned about a total loss house fire then burglary. It's good piece of mind for about a buck a day.

My regular homeowners policy will cover firearms as regular personal property for all losses except theft.

State Farm....The limitations for firearm theft is $2500 on a standard policy. Any loss other than theft is covered up max of my personal property coverage.

I have the Historic Firearms policy mentioned above for theft. If I recall correctly the minimum coverage they offer is $35k. I believe that amount is about $125 a year.

Collector's is who I use. Never had claim, nor a complaint with them.

Same here. No claims but seems like a stand up company. Yearly cost is very reasonable. Safe, alarm system etc all count towards giving you a better deal. And no serial numbers.

I use Collectibles and have had no issues, of course I haven't had a claim either. I do know one coin collector that had a pretty substantial collection stolen and he said it was handled very professionally.

I got a separate policy with Farmers for about half of what the NRA Insurance was. I had the NRA Insurance for close to 20 years and never had to use it until last Spring. Had a Colt Detective Special stolen. They looked at the blue book value and then devalued it by roughly 50% and that is what they paid. When I replaced it, with proof of what I paid for the replacement gun, they sent me the difference in a 2nd check.

My original gun was worth considerable more than the 50% value they put on it, plus, I did not like having to replace it to recoup the book value of the gun. Both the stolen gun and its replacement were 98-99% condition.

The policy I now have covers the entire replacement cost without the hoops. I hope I never need it again, but if I do, replacing my collection or not should be my choice.

Read the fine print.

Insured with Collectibles here. Very easy company to deal with. Never had a claim, but know a few folks who have. They cover travel loss as well as theft and fire and the like. Reasonable rates and you only have to specifically identify anything that is $5k or more.

I have Collectibles for guns and a collection of cut glass. Have had 2 claims for glass (darned earthquakes). You fill out the claim form, send it, along with the valuation (receipt, comparables, etc.) and pictures to them. In a couple weeks they send a check. Good folks.

My homeowner's want pics and serial# for the rider, forget that so I've been with Collectables for 2 years now, 4k of coverage is very reasonable.

I was turned down by Farmers, wouldn't insure my collection.

State Farm would only cover up to a certain amount (I think 50k?) before they insist on bars on your windows. The default homeowners insurance policy would cover a certain amount on a loss - but sporting goods is typically capped at a set amount and ALL of your toys are thrown in to that (golf clubs, archery equipment, etc).

I ended up going with NRA Armscare. My policy is backed by Lloyd's of London (over 100k insured).

I had to provide serial #'s on any single items over $2500.

I also went through about 2 weeks of back and forth to get them to insure my Soviet DSHK heavy machinegun build (was built as a semiauto 50BMG), because they couldn't find a value on it anywhere on the internet or auction sites, and were hesitant to insure it at my declared value. Insisted on me sending them the original bill of sale. I argued for increased coverage as it is (for all intents and purposes) an irreplacable item, and they finally allowed a higher declared value.

Insurance is a pain in the butt. My policy costs me upwards of $1k a month.

You owe it to yourself to get a quote

For those using "Collect Insure"

You owe it to yourself to get a quote from Eastern Insurance.

Same with anybody messing with riders from a homeowner insurance.

I'd go with someone I trust who has a great reputation. Every year I shop around and I end up with the NRA insurance. http://www.locktonrisk.com/nrains/armscareplus.htm

They recently reduced their premiums from $17.50 per $1,000 to only $12.50 per $1000. WAY cheaper than most reputable places.

And, many places require a list of your guns to insure you. No thanks. I don't need some lackey selling my information, or robbing me.

My homeowners policy has a baseline $10,000 on guns and accessories, and unlimited on ammo (up to policy limits of course). As an NRA member, I believe you have $2,500 automatically. I purchased a supplemental NRA policy for amounts above these thresholds.

I'd strongly recommend it for anyone with a nice collection.

Eastern. . Mine costs about $2.50 per 1000. 500 deductible.

and ammo and reloading plus safe are covered.. no serials.

by the way: you only get the free 2500 NRA insurance if you ask for it.

=====================================================

Can't believe what folks are not seeing about the premium at Eastern.

Let's say you have $45000 in the collection. The premium with a 500 deductible might be $120. For the Year.

Did I just see somebody paying $100 a month?

State Farm told me I would have to list every serial number with them in order to obtain insurance. Of course (insert sarcasm here) I'm sure no government agency would EVER try to access the information. After all, we have privacy laws LOL. Don
