Well I like squirrel, as a country boy it was a regular breakfast meat at certian times of the year , but 18 days steady,:(. I am refering to a news blog in San Franciscio I read about this AM. Hunter, 72 years old lost in Mendocenio Forest, survived on squirrel for 18 days. Just goes to show you a good hunter can still feed himself in this day and age. Grey, Red, Fox, Ground,
didn't say, meat is meat I guess. Big old fat Greys are the best.:D

He was lucky to be carrying enough ammo to feed himself for 18 days. Good for him. Many others may not have made it under the circumstances.

I like it too but I like it fried up with garlic salt and lots of black pepper. That or in dumplings. I seriously doubt that he had all of that at his disposal. I don't think I'd like it too much stuck on a stick and roasted over a fire.

Off the subject: Hunting the backwoods of Maine for twenty five years, for a week at a time, once a year, getting lost was always on my mind. I carried a back pack, lunch, two compasses, a 22cal side arm, with 50 rounds and 25 rounds of what ever ammo was dujor for the rifle. Basic first aid and survival gear.
Never got lost, walked out after dark a couple of times, and came out on the wrong road a few times.
As for my home state, Rhode Isalnd if one walked a stright line in the woods, any woods for a mile or less, one would cut a paved road.
Quit hunting when a bad hip made keeping ones feet in the woods hard.

You happen to note the guys age, 72. Not elderly yet but getting on. Frog, well that is pretty good too, get them at the local Chinese Buffett, maybe snake too but who knows at buffetts.

I've read that eating only lean meat like rabbit and scrawny squirrels can lead to severe health problems because of the lack of fat.

Good for him, and happy to see he came out alive. Not that I have ever really experienced it but they say hunger is the best spice. I bet the squirrel on a stick was mighty tasty at the time. Of course I like squirrel on a stick......

He also ate snakes and lizards as he set snares. Skilled person for sure. Got down in 20/ in the evening.

Lost hunter

I've hunted that area for decades, though not for the last decade. I quit going there because there are just too many people there, many of them seem unsafe. The last 2 times I was there I saw a LOT of S.E. Asians carrying both a deer rifle and a shotgun. They hunted hard and killed a lot of squirrels. Mostly grey's and fox squirrels in that area.
I spent a cold night in the woods there, sometime around 1980. I tried a shortcut that didn't work out and it got dark before I could backtrack. I carry more supplies since then, space blanket, fire starting suppies, food and water, extra ammo.

He doesn't sound "lost" to me. He might not have found his way out of the woods, but he sure knows his way around. Finding food as "easy" as he was, he just might not have been in the same hurry others might have been. The cold may be a different story...
