I've seen a few of these recoil pads that slip over the right shoulder talked about. Are they worth it and do they work?

I thought about even making one myself... maybe a piece of something that could spread the recoil across my entire shoulder instead of a focused point like a gun stock. I think this focused point is a big reason for the recoil being sharp. For the pad maybe a 5"x7"x3/8" rectangle semi flexible/pliable material such as a soft encapsulated lead sheet would do the trick (maybe roof flashing but laminated to something like vinyl or a flexible plastic).

Anyways, curious if there's something out there like this. Recoil isn't really that bad (I've shot rifles and 12GA's since I was a kid) but I get tired of that sore shoulder feeling after a while. Call me a wimp!

Try a recoil pad that slips over the buttstock if you only have one or two firearms you are worried about. They work pretty well.

I've used a slip-on Pachmeyer Deccelerator pad on some Mil-Spec rifles with metal butt plates and they work great. Also used on SKS, AK or Arisakas to add a little length to the stock. Works great on my Win 94 too. Highly recommended.

I've seen and used those (Limbsaver I think is the one I used to have). I was wondering if anyone has experience with these:

Or something home-made?

I've got the slip on Limbsaver pads on several of my rifles. They definitely work. Are there better pads yeah there probably is, but for $20 a piece I'll continue to use them.

I just picked up a Pachmayr Decelerator slip on recoil pad (brown, large) the other day. I shot my M1 Garand with it today and absolutely love it. It works even better than I expected. I will readily admit, I don't like big recoil. It hurts, it distracts, it detracts, and it fatigues. Shooting prone it sometimes annoys my collar bone. Not any more!

The rifle also fits me better due to the LOP increase, my thumb no longer tries to hit me in the cheek under recoil.

I HIGHLY recommend it. It seriously makes a huge difference.

+1 for anything pachmyer. I've tried a few different brands, nothing better than a pachmyer. I have one on a lightweight 30-06 and it's great.

I have Limb-Savers on my 94 30-30 and a light-weight 30-06 bolt action. They work great for me. I tried a Past shoulder pad, but it was not very comfortable. I don't use anything on my M-1 or Swedish Mauser in 6.5 x 55. My problem is using blood thinners, so I bruise easily. Getting old is no fun!

If you've only got a few rifles, I'm sure the ones that attach to the rifle butts are fine.
But if you've got quite a few rifles, and like to shoot several guns in one range outing, I think the PAST pads are perfect.
I have a magnum version of the PAST pad you posted a pic of, 30-06, 8mm, whatever you've got, all day, no problems.
Two thumbs up.

Use both; the recoil pad on the rifle and the Past shield. I do. It's one thing when you're concentrating on hitting that mammal or avoiding the shots that other mammal is sending. But when you don't have the mammalian distraction, rubber helps.

I've got a leather sleeve, with a gel inside the leather pocket, a velcro flap attaches onto the opposite side, holding it into place . I got it off of Midway. It envelopes the butt of the stock perfectly.

Have both the PAST Field Model and the PAST Double Magnum, and they are both great. No more bruised shoulders.

As mentioned, IMO/IME the best stock mounted recoil pads are the Limbsaver and the KICK-EEZ.

All of the above are worth their weight in gold, especially if you like to shoot shotgun slugs from the bench :).

Just my .02,

-1 for Limb-Saver. I use the Limb-Saver on my Mosin Nagant. Yes, I hold the rifle firm against my shoulder but it still kicks like a mule.

I think i will look into the Pachmeyer Pad. I went to the range Saturday and after 30 rounds I am bruised. I think the problem with the Limb-Saver (as someone mentioned) is that it focuses the pressure in a small area, the idea of spreading it over the entire area is what i will look for.

I have both the Past and Limbsaver shoulder pads for extended range sessions. They both work and my nod goes to the Limbsaver for effectiveness. Using either in conjunction with a good pad on the buttstock increases shootability.

I use the Pachmayr Decelerator slip on recoil pad (medium) on my Sako85, simply to increase LOP. It's in 6.5x55, so doesn't need any taming, but the recoil moves from "minor" to "not noticeable".

I have one of the Past protectors like the one in the picture. I have a few rifles with curved steel or brass buttplates that get my attention when shooting them with no protection and slip on pads don't work all that well on them. The protector does it's job pretty good but I find it annoying to wear. It still beats a sore shoulder though.

I have both types. The pads come in different thickness and are effective. You need to get use to the fact that they fasten around the chest with a strap. If the shoulder is bothering me, I use one (have two different pads one light and one heavy) just slip it on the shoulder and put a jacket over it. It will save you a lot of pain.

The slip-on pads that are on the rifles are there for LOP more than anything else and work just as well. One on a SKS and one on a shotgun.

for load-developement sessions i use a folded up army blanket. soaks up all the rounds out of a seven pound 06', or whatever hard kicker i am shooting.

may work for you now until you find a permanent solution.
