Im looking for a new gun. Tell me what you think
Criteria:
1) Box Magazine Fed
2) Can take down deer, coyotes, and Home defense
3) Accurate say out to 200
4) Available and semi-affordable ammunition
5) No "black guns". I like wood stocks

Tell me what you think

There was a recent thread about an old school Remington model 8. Those things are very cool.

Maybe a Ruger Camp Carbine or a BAR.

Wait... Are you looking for a semi-auto, bolt, or lever?

I recently purchased a Savage 340 in 30-30. Seems like it meets all of your criteria. And it certainly is different, though there are probably dozens of more common rifles that would suffice also.

How about an M1 carbine? Or maybe a mini14? A magazine-fed SKS? My first impulse was to say Garand but that is rather lengthy for HD and doesn't have a detachable box magazine.

M1-A. Not sure it would be my go to gun for HD though. In fact, it's not. Thats just asking for lawsuits when I blow through the bad guy and the bullet ends up in my neighbor's house. Mini-14 would be a player for sure though. But what is your price range? That's the big question.

There are a number of rifles which fulfill all your criteria. Amongst bolt guns, there are the old Savage 240D, which could be had in .30-30. Then of course the late great British military rifle, the Lee-Enfield, in .303 British was fed from a ten round detachable box. It's one of the smoothest operating bolts you'll find, and surplus ammo is still around, if you look. Otherwise commercial isn't too hateful. If newer is your thing, the new Ruger Scout comes with a laminate stock, and feeds from a ten round box. Alternatively, if you like more conventional rifles, the Tikka line are also mag fed.

If semi-auto is your thing, then you could choose the AK. It certainly fed from a box, could kill a deer or a coyote, and had a wood-ish stock. If you don't like commie guns, you could always pick the Right Arm of the Free World, the FN FAL. If homegrown is more your thing, then there's the M-14/M1A family.

There are even box mag fed leverguns. Consider the Savage 99 and Browning BLR.

Lots to choose from.

Lots of good suggestions already though I don't think that the Camp is a deer rifle out to 200 yards. Fine gun otherwise.

I would go with the FAL or VEPR, both in 308.

remington pump 7600 in .223-.243-.308 would be a good rifle also. eastbank.

Maybe a Mini-30?
Or a Marlin 30-30?
If it were just for hunting, I think a CZ-527 would be an entirely awesome rifle, but a bolt action set up for hunting isn't ideal for HD.

I may go more toward a lever action or a Remington 760/7600 if HD has to be part of the equation and you don't like semi-autos. But even then, a 30'06 isn't generally an ideal HD round.

One I almost brought home the other day was a Browning 1895 in 30-40 Krag. If it had been a 30'06, I may not have been able to let it in the store. Just something about that old school levergun with a box magazine that can use pointed bullets...

i have one of the mid 80,s 1895 brownings in 30-40 krag, a grade 1,they made less in 30-40 than in the 30-06. eastbank.

As far as actions go, Either Semi Auto or Bolt. (There isn't much mag fed lever guns anyways) Keep this up, Im learning new guns :)

I would look at a Saiga or a Vepr.

A couple years ago I picked up a Saiga in 223 for $400 out the door and was considering a conversion but after shooting it, I really like it the way it is. Short, handy, and accuracy is under 1" at 50 yards. You could get a set of wood stocks for it and have a nice unique firearm.

If HD is on the menu, I'd prefer a semi-auto to a bolt action. If you're into traditional style guns, I'd look hard at the Mini-30 or look for an SKS.

As much as I like the Saiga's utility, they've always looked like a neutered AK to me... because that's what they are. I can't warm up to them unless they're converted.

But the SKS's I've owned were pretty good rifles and I haven't heard much bad about Mini's lately either.

If I had your requirements I'd be looking at a mini 14, mini 30, or a M1A

Ak with wood furniture would work too!

Tikka T3 Hunter (wood stock) or T3 Sporter (laminated wood stock and heavy barrel) chambered in .308 with an aftermarket bottom metal conversion to use 10 round AI magazines.
