I've long been interested in getting into comp matches. I have had little luck in searching for places for which to do so. The only place I've found is about an hour away and requires approval from two existing members to join. There seams to be a lot of invite only involved in my area. Is there a good listing of clubs or sites somewhere?

What kind of competition do you want to do? Rifle? Pistol? Shotgun? Long-range, practical, run&gun, clays, Cowboy, black powder, etc?

Places to shoot

Here are 2 sources for information you may want to check:

nssf.org National Shooting Sports Foundation

I was looking start in steel match or IDPA with pistol. Only thing I've really competed in is a local Bullseye shoot at an in door range.

Around here you don't need to be a club member to shoot a match. The match fee is, in part, a temporary membership.

To practice at a club you do need to be a member or guest of a member.

Yep - I've seen places that charge non-members a little extra (usually less than $5), but I've never seen anywhere that required you to be a club member in order to shoot a match. Heck many clubs are full and have a waiting list and lots of people shoot at multiple club matches.

There's a club locally that does that - the result of club politics :barf: (one reason I've never joined a club).

Seems the shotgunners saw handgunners as dangerous tacticool mouthbreathers, and found a way to get hysterical over some drummed-up "safety violations" during a match. The compromise was to limit match participation to club members only. Ironically, it was the public match that brought in a sizeable cash flow, that they're now without. Everyone loses.

Google you "nearest fairly large city + Pistol competition"
and/or "Steel Challenge, IDPA Matches, USPSA Matches
Also check at all your local "ranges" for competitions that may be held or advertised there.

IDPA and USPSA matches, if held under those names and affiliations, are required to be open to the public.

Depending on what side of the state you're in, if you're in the eastern half it's not too far of a drive over to the massive shooting complex in Sparta, IL. You'll likely find anything you want there.

thanks for the replies. I found a club in about an hour from me that does steel matches.

Lamar is where I found the gun club. I'm fairly close to Springfield

Big Piney Sportsman's Club
Houston Missouri

We are about 2 hours from Springfield East.
We shoot Steel one month and a Defensive Pistol Match loosely based on IDPA the next month. We shoot an ICORE Revolver match on the Sunday following the Steel or Defensive Pistol match on Saturday.

We charge $10 for the first entry, and $5 for additional entries. Almost everyone shoots more than one time. We have a shooter from around Springfield who drives down.

Our Steel is Reactive Steel Challenge. We have a Plate Rack, 2 Dueling Trees, 2 Full Size Pepper Poppers, and a Reactive Pepper Popper. We have a Texas Star. We have 12 Tall Boy Tomb Stones, and 6 Shorty Tomb Stones, A Left and Right Shoot The Boot Reactive target. Shoot the boot and a silhouette drops from behind cover. We have a Drop and Turn activated by steel. We have a Duel Swinger activated by steel. I think that is most of them.

We are the only ICORE Revolver Range in Missouri. ICORE is 100% Revolvers. And we are shooting ICORE Rimfire already. Rimfire was just approved.
We normally have a Stage or two of steel in the ICORE Match.
