Where do you live? And why?

I'm living in Dallas, Texas. my son married a Texas gal and I don't want to miss my Grandgirls growing up.
It's flat, dry and ugly here. Nothing to brag on that I can see. Got a lake a few feet away thats so polluted theres a warning ref. eating the fish. Can't swim in it and the only boating is the rich boys with their little sailboats.
Can't believe one of the Texas folks listed mountains in his things to love about Texas. Those are hills, at best.

Southern California and not by choice.
1, finding a job is hard, i'm lucky to have one
2, not rich enough to move away.

why i don't like it here:
- most people are real jerks
- too many rules
- people are liberal the wrong way
- smog. i think that causes more cancer than cigarettes
- terrible traffic
- make 33% more than national average but cost of living is 220% more
- too much taxes
- gun control
- land of one climate: summer and weather is mostly sun or sun with clouds. i feel i'm missing out big time

We Texans think Texas is special and has a lot to brag about.

In the middle of nowhere Mississippi on a lonely road surrounded by forest. Ah, it's nice.

Actually the why is easy. I married a Southern gal, some 40 years ago, and through her eyes learned to appreciate the South and all it offers. While Upstate New York was declining, South Carolina was vibrant and growing. It has been fascinating to be a part of it.

I moved south the day I graduated from college. I had a job in Dallas Texas and life progressed from there, but always in the South.

Ah, you need to get out more. Texas is really an interesting state. There are mountains in the western part of the state (El Paso direction). Check out Big Bend National Park. But I like Tennessee better.

Northwest Wisconsin
Lots of fishing, lots of hunting
Lots of elbow room
And very good neighbors

I live in Japan just north of Tokyo. It has the best opportunities for the work I do and languages I speak/read. Now I'm too old to move and start over and I'm locked in with the in-laws' business anyway.

Work is an interesting challenge and likely to make some good coin doing it but guns are not part of my lifestyle here.

Reading Ferretray's comments about Dallas - I can't imagine living in any big city in Texas. That would be so close but too far. I would prefer somewhere further west in a smaller city like San Antonio. I would even go back to El Paso rather than Dallas or Houston. I've had about all the big city life I need.

A friend of mine sent me a pic of Florida's tallest waterfall. I think it was 18". the mountains must be beautiful this time of year.

I live in SW Oklahoma in the country. Even have a range on my front yard. I grew up in Colorado and thought Oklahoma was for folks that didn't know any better. Got stationed here in the Air Force 22 years ago and retired here in 1994. A great place to raise kids and I see more deer and turkey than I ever saw hunting in Colorado. I own my own business and own 400 acres of hunting land with a lot of deer on it. I actually am where I would bug out to.

Born and raised in northern California and educated on the central coast. Left 17 years ago living in Texas twice, Kansas, Alberta, the UAE, Qatar and Kazakhstan. Currently live in Queensland Australia due to work and own homes in the Texas Hill Country and north Idaho. I will retire in a couple of years at 54 and head home bouncing between Texas and Idaho. More than pleased.

I live less than a mile from where I was born 81 yrs ago. Been to lots of other places but due to family considerations I came back.

I was born and raised on a cattle ranch in Oregon. I went into the Air Force after high school and was stationed briefly in Texas, then Virginia, California, Japan, Korea, and then back to California for the last 20 months. I moved back to Oregon because I wanted to be near my family. I worked for the state in law enforcement for eleven years before starting my own security business. I live about twenty miles above the California-Oregon border, our winters are cold with snow, our Summers are warm with lots of sunshine and very little rain. I hate the fact that Oregon is becoming more liberal every year, but it is still much better than living in California. Our firearms laws are reasonable, I can own just about any kind of firearm I would want as long as I comply with federal firearms laws and stay out of trouble.

I grew up in Oregon. Went in the Air Force at age 20. Was stationed in Cal. Taiwan and Idaho. I Got out for six months and then went in the army where I was stationed in Germany. My last year was Florida and then Texas. I ended up in Connecticut because my wife is from here and all her family is here. I don't care for it here because of the gun laws. No wide open spaces to shoot. $19 a half hour for the indoor range. I'm stuck here because of my wife who would not move and also has a good job here. I'm retired do to my health. Would love to check out NC. or go back out west but it ain't happenin

Texas, just because.

Texas. Moved here from Chicago 2 years ago, where I lived for about 15 years. I moved to Texas by myself looking for a better geographical location for my outdoor hobbies. Texas is a great compromise of cheap living expenses and good outdoor activity variety nearby.

That said, I grew up overseas in Europe.

I live in a small town in Eastern PA.I have been here all.of my life except for my time in the US Army during the Vietnam experince.I worked within 15 miles of my home which is the house that I was born in. I live here mainly because I am too old to move and have to start all over & most of my family lives in close proximity.

Been from Coast to Coast in the last 24 years with the US Air Force. I thought they were going to leave me to rot in Missouri but I got moved to Lower Alabama and stationed at Eglin AFB for my last few years. I'm starting that last year now. Not sure where I'll go after this - but I know gun hatin' states aren't high on my list of places to go.
Missouri was okay. Spent quite a bit of time in Texas on trips (business related). Nevada and New Mexico are NOT for me. Same with California (and they are not gun friendly). We'll see....

SE Michigan. No tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, wild or forest fires.

I grew up in this very house I live in now (Eastern Ohio).
However, when I got out of school and the Army, there was no place around here to get a decent job. This area was a big heavy industry area when I was growing up and many years before that. Everyone I was related to worked in a steel mill. But, by the time I became an adult, American heavy industry was struggling and on the ropes.

So, I moved to Las Vegas NV and lived there almost my whole adult life. I went there because I was offered a job there. I sold a 1911 (AMT Hardballer) for the gas money and I left. I had never been in Nevada. Had no where to live and all that. Turned out to be a great move on my part. I had a great career.
But, I never liked living there. I didn't hate it, but I would have preferred to live somewhere else. I don't like hot weather. I don't like the desert. I don't like the lack of seasons. I don't like living in a big city.....................The whole time I was there, I was planning to move. I saved, never got into serious debt........ so that I could retire as soon as I was eligible and leave.

One day early on in my career, people were talking about retiring, then moving to some third world country in Central or South America and "living like a king on your pension". I said, you know you can do the same thing in the US. You just have to move outside of a major city to a place with no economy. You can live VERY inexpensively yet still be in the United States and have access to first world medical care, first world amentities..............

So, as soon as I was old enough to collect the minimum pension (50 years old), I moved right back to where I grew up. I bought my sisters out of this house and here I am. This house cost me about 25% of what my house cost me in Las Vegas. My pension which was a minimal pension where I worked is about twice the average income here (based on the numbers I found on the internet). And, I really enjoy living here. It is home. My family moved to what is now Ohio shortly after they fought in the American Revolution. I like the climate, I like the terrain, I like the people, I like the cost of living...................

There are a few (a very few) things I miss about living in Nevada. The weather definitely isn't one of them. I enjoyed shooting out there much more than here mainly.

Necro thread. Thanks for the bump. I've been gone for years, and missed it.

I've only read the first page so far, but will be back to read when I'm not so braindead after a long day. Color me curious.

Where do I live -- and where have I lived -- and why? Hmm. I've been quasi-nomadic from my 20's on.

I was born near Memphis. Hunted in the woods that are now suburbs. Ack.

From there, to TX (grad school), then to RI (more grad school), then back to Memphis (aging parents needed help, more grad school).

Then to ABQ, NM (final grad school and work, plus beautiful high desert; I'm a desert rat at heart).

After that came WA and OR for ten years. Interesting at first, but couldn't wait to leave. Beautiful country, but the culture (of western OR) was not right for me -- too much CA influence, including newagers.

Then I moved to Maine -- had friends there, and for professional collaboration. Once there, I drifted (my professional requires some traveling) through 8 cities and towns, the last four on the coast. Home is somewhere there on the coast well north of Portland; I won't know where until I get back. I've never lived in such a beautiful place (the Maine coast is beyond comparison for me, more so than the Rockies, Cascades and deserts of the west) with a grounded, no-non-sense, authentic culture as there. It is home.

Right now, I'm in western Oregon (for professional reasons), which is where I was five years ago for ten years. I don't like it here. (Too much of the fluffy CA culture.)

But I'm leaving for north central Florida in November. I'll be there until spring, when I return home.

But this time, when I leave OR, I'll be taking my guns with me -- even if a different kit this time --- rather than leave them in storage. (Yes, that's a very long sad story about plans that didn't work out in an unpleasant way.)

The Sunny South. Because I was born here, went to college here (twice), got married here (twice) and I lived in the Nawth, the far West and the not so far West. I like the South for the same reason most people like where they live: climate, hunting, fishing, shooting and most politics is to my liking.
