Cleaning a Remington 1100.

I clean my 1100 every 1,000 rounds or so. It takes a leisurely 1/2 hour and it is clean enough to go another 1,000.

Like Esox said, I clean mine every 1000 rounds or so, and it takes me less than a half hour to clean it. Once in a blue moon I'll take the trigger assembly out and shoot it with CLP and use a tooth brush to get the crud out, wipe it down good and re-assemble, takes all of a half hour.

I've an LT-20 version of this gun and when I use Rem Sluggers, there's a very tough, silver deposit on most of the gas cylinder area... what do you fellows use to cut carbon in those situations?

I can clean any shotgun barrel quickly, with AI&P's powered steel-wool-on-a-stick method. It's the powder gas deposits that are giving me fits.

Gads. I pull the fore end and barrel, spray the gas parts with RemOil, and wipe off the excess. And I wipe off the outside with a slightly oily rag. Takes less than 5 minutes. I do this whether I shoot one round or 500. Once a year I will do a complete teardown and clean everything. I have been doing this since about 1965. For the first couple of years I was a bit anal and did a lot more every time, but I found it unnecessary.
I have had dozens of shotguns, but I have yet to find one I like better than the 1100/11-87 platform, for me. They do not carry the current in vogue tough guy image, but I am well past needing any image. I have had 13 of them in total; still have the '63 and four more. They will not go as long between the quick spray and wipe cleanings as some of the newer designs, but that doesn't bother me. I am not yet that lazy or short of time. I have carried one all over North America hunting, and I will not own an unreliable gun.

i pull the forend,take the barrel off and spray with a good scubber in the barrel and gas port area and set it aside. pull the breech block back to lock and spray the mag tube and recoil parts with the scrubber and lay aside and then start on the barrel with a rod tipped with oooosteel wool,maybe 20 strokes and a few patches and it done,next the gas port asselmby with a pad of the same steel wool . now for the rest,steel wool on the mag tube along with the gas metal parts. wipe off and lightly lube and this is after 600 rounds. once a year i replace the o-ring and clean the trigger asslemby. the only part i have replaced on my 1100-1187,s is the o-rings once a year and i shoot thousands of shells a year out of my shotguns and run a mec 9000G and a mec 9000GH to keep up with the shotguns. eastbank.

My quick $.02....
If you shoot dirty ol' reloads like me,
* get a small drill bit that barely fits through gas ports and twirl it through WITH YOUR FINGERS.
* Lightly wipe your clean mag tube with NON-AEROSOL oil. (do not use wd40, it will gum up in cold weather){oh yes it will}.
*pull trigger assbly and blast clean with compressed air, lightly oil.
*wipe outside with Remoil, 3-n-1, etc.... I have even used clean motor oil.

---You're good for 350 rds or so.

I basically do what the posts above do, I like a clean gun and it's never more than 30 minutes - I have been shooting 1100's since 72 and thousands of rds through them in rain sleet snow and mud and never had one miss a beat . I changed one O ring after 12 years and it was as good as new

Brake cleaner on the inside of the barrel and gas port cleans it immediately (as well as the choke tubes and threads)....pipe cleaner or proper sized wire drill bit (used by hand gently being pushed) will clean the inside of the gas ports in 5 seconds. Wipe the barrel down, clean the choke tube itself, wipe down with RemOil or similar and done in less than 15 minutes
