So I am hunting late Whitetail in North Eastern Washington and I find in two separate locations (middle of nowhere) on steep slopes different types of mushrooms in tree and bush branches. Not ones growing, but ones that were on the ground and somehow got into the branches. At first I thought a crow or squirrel might have dropped it but after seeing between 15 and 20 in different locations I can't figure it out. Anyone else had similar findings? I know that Pack Rats, collect shrooms. Here's a pick of a shroom and of my 4pt that I got the following day when the snow started to fly.

Its not just rodents and the like that can leave things in trees, Ive seen black birds, buzzard etc pick up everything from coffee containers to wiffle balls and seemingly just place them in the tree tops.

I originally thought critter and still believe that to be the truth. Just the shear number (I ran into close to 20 and wasn't looking for them or sticking around to look for more) and location(s) are what is confusing. Between 3 and 5 feet off the ground, in trees and bushes some below canopy, some looked random and others were almost in a line like marking a trail every 7yds. Just chalk it up to weird stuff in the woods.

:p maybe you should set up a game cam to watch the tree tops? I'm curious as well I've never seen that many items of anykind placed in the tree tops and brush.

:uhoh: maybe its a tweaker? Seriously tho, ive seen em do some weird things in the woods.

I have seen squirrels stash mushrooms up in tree branches. I assumed they were doing that to dry them out before stashing them in the spruce litter they stash their pine cones in.
They seem to take a nibble or two out of them and let them sit for awhile before they bury them. I thought maybe to protect them from eating too many of the occasional Amanita muscaria, "Fly Agaric" we have here in the Colorado Rockies (which is supposed to be a rather unpeasant sort of "Transformative" experience).
The mushroom posted by the OP looks like it may be a Bolete of some kind which can be dried for storage and would make a welcome change of diet for a squirrel after a few months on a pine cone regimen. The specimen pictured looks a little rough for my tastes though.

Red squirrels will do it. First couple of times I seen it I wondered about it until I seen the squirrel. Only place I've seen it is in the UP tho.

Off East Betsy Tower Rd. in a couple of big white pines on the south side of the road. If anyone goes by they can see if they're still there.
