There have been many posts about gun buy backs but no one has ever mentioned this paper:

Study Link

It's by Wallace Mullen of Michigan State University, written in May 2000. It's not about any buy back program in particular but it's a scientific study about the economics of buy backs. There's a lot of math but in general the conclusion is that gun buy backs actually increase the number of firearms in the area where buy backs occur. It's not a quick or easy read but very interesting.

Okay, i didnt really read the whole thing but got the point. It is obvious enough from just reading comments on thr about govt purchase events, that some owners use the events to dispose of useless sewer pipes that have triggers attached. In those cases the purchase events provide a better than scrap metal value for disposal. Thank you for that but i prefer they stop wasting tax dollars. This study uses too many assumptions and variables that cant really be measured. I agree that the conclusion may be true but the method to get there is questionable.

A good friend of mine worked at one of the buy back programs. He said there were a handful of guys with cash buying guns from people in the line of cars waiting to get in.
His observation at this place was many older folks over 65-70 who had firearms they didn't know what to do with. Some had loaded revolvers that the rounds were green and stuck in the cyls. Some had old autos they could not operate because of hand strength.

Now im going to read the study. I didn't want to forget what I posted.

I agree with OldMac. I think this study would be more realistic of you change the word gun for TV or car as on page 7 ! Gun buy backs might reduce the number of ILLEGAL guns in high crime areas in state that prohibit gun ownership in the first place {Ex:NYC,DC etc..} Im no Harvard grad but any law abiding gun owner does not buy a second gun only to trade in the first at a gun buy back program because its used and take $50 for a $400 firearm.
I really think these programs help people that have troubled children or grandchildren in their homes and want to avoid gun theft.
People that were left guns or found a gun from a spouse that passed and are afraid of it.
Or folks that bought a $40 gun, know its got to be HOT and want to get $100 buy back !

Just me $.02 worth and not in favor of the money wasted on these programs either.

The long and short of it matches a conclusion I came to years ago.... I think the first "buyback" I can remember was in the early or mid eighties when I was working as a sergeant on the street down here in paradise. The moment some genius came up with the first one in our area it was pretty apparent that it was just poitical BS...

At best the folks involved got to feel good (and the positive press meant that at least local "leaders" appeared to be doing something pro-active about "gun violence" ).

The reality is that it didn't make the slightest difference in the casualty rate in the on-going street wars of that era....

....and so it goes (Vonnegut).

Thank you for that but i prefer they stop wasting tax dollars.

I'm sure they are done many different ways, but all of the buy backs I've had knowledge of did not use tax dollars to pay for the guns. Usually some wealthy individual, celebrity, or organization puts up money to pay for the guns. Often not in cash, but in concert tickets, gift cards, etc. The police officers there are not on duty, but are off duty security paid by the sponsors, just like the officers checking guns at a gunshow.

I have no problems turning in a useless gun for cash in these situations. I'm draining their resources and adding to my ability to buy better guns. This is a win/win situation for me. Apparently a lot of other people are doing the same.

My English is far from perfect but how can one buy "back" something that never belonged to him in any form?

"Gun Buyback" is a misnomer for the reasons that you state. But to the anti-gun folks it probably sounds better than "Useless Political Stunt."
