The Spartan is a great gun. I've got one, along with a Les Baer. Two ends of the spectrum in price but the Spartan stacks up really quite well against higher-end 1911's. The trigger on the Spartan is surprisingly good, probably the best I've felt on 1911 under $1000.
Its been very reliable eating ball ammo. It doesn't like SWC as much but most 1911's don't, including my Baer. I only use Tripp Cobra mags.
I had 1 problem with the Spartan; the rear sight elevation screw broke. I emailed STI and they had a new screw out to me in 3 days or less, no questions asked.
I'd look at the Springfield Armory Range Officer. If you're patient, they can be had for less than $700 on GunBroker. There is a dealer (also on GB) that is selling STI Spartans for $649, currently only in compact, but he has had full sized. He will re-stock them.
I'm not a 1911 fan. There are more modern DA/SA, DAO, whatever, handguns available in .45 ACP. If you only want a handgun to shoot up 1500 rounds, you have a wide range of choices. If you just want a 1911, the Ruger is probably a real good one.
