I've been searching for a way to securely store a pistol within reach of my desk in my home office. I would prefer something that I can mount somewhere on the desk itself, since the area around my desk is constantly full of boxes, papers, and notebooks.

Thus far the only option that I have found is the SV500 Speedvault from GunVault.

Does anybody have any experience with this particular safe, good bad or otherwise? Any other options besides this one?

Mods, if there is already a discussion of this safe somewhere then please point me to it. My computer is dead at the moment, and the search is not working properly from my Android phone.

I do not have any experience with that particular model, but I do have one, each, of their MiniVaults and MultiVaults.

They described them as requiring a battery change (each requires 8 AA batteries, IIRC) once a year.

Within a couple of years both units were sucking their 8 Duracells flat within 3 months. Several calls to GunVault failed to correct the issue, so I decided to stop feeding them the massive quantities of expensive batteries they demanded and only access them via the keys.

Life.

FYI ... :)

One with a mechanical lock.

Thanks guys! I haven't ordered a safe yet, so I'll check these other options out in the next day or two.

I have looked at and considered the SV500 for a similar firearm storage option a while back and decided against it. It is pretty expensive for what it is and what it is not. You can get a similar small safe from the same company that holds more firearms with a biometric lock for roughly the same amount of money. I was also turned off by 8AA batteries to power the device. Other quick access safes use the larger but fewer needed 9V battery with the same results. Keep looking, you will probably find something that fits your needs better.

The wife gave me one of these for Christmas. Quite ingenious. It is possible to bolt it in any position, or it looks nice sitting on top of a desk. No one will know what it is. They include a little plastic part that limits hinge travel if you mount it upside down... so the pistol doesn't come falling out. Mine works quite well. The fingerprint reader is not 100%, but they also provide little RFID stickers you can put in your wallet or whatever (I put mine in my cell phone case). Then all you do is wave the RFID chip over it and it opens quietly. Quite nice!

I have NO affiliation with these guys. I can tell you that they're a new company and their customer service is nearly instant and personal.
