ok i want a H/D shotgun i have a BPS turkey / Deer gun barrel is 20"
smooth bore and has sight and is D/T for scope base. or would i be better off
if i just went out and got say in 870 0r mossberg 500 that is made for this or try and turn this into a self defence shotgun. i would like a higher round count
then 3 and a flashlight on it. what would suggest thanks

The BPS is a good shotgun, you already have it and are at least somewhat familiar with it. Why complicate things by adding another make/model shotgun to your inventory that you will have to remember how to run in a tense situation?

Is the magazine on your BPS plugged? If so, remove the plug and your capacity goes up. And several companies make magazine extensions that fit Brownings, if you want even more (use a barrel clamp if you add an extension!).

Browning made a home defense/security version of the BPS too, if you want a dedicated HD shotgun and can locate one of those.

There are any number of ways to mount flashlights on shotguns. I'd suggest an accessory rail and a good LED rail mounted weapon light, not just any old flashlight, but that's just my opinion - YMMV. I generally use a clamp-on rail from Streamlight on the magazine extension tube or a ring type under the magazine cap to mount a weapon light on my 870s. Make sure these mounts will fit your shotgun if you decide to order one of them. See

IIRC they make a 20" version of the BPS with a full length mag tube that holds 7+1. I remember seeing/handling one at my LGS and thought it was much nicer finished that the typical 870 or Mossberg.

I like Browning/FN shotguns very much. My only two shotguns are a FN SLP & a Browning Cynergy. I don't believe you would go wrong sticking with a BPS.

I assume it is threaded for choke tubes. You may want to experiment with different tubes and buckshot to see what gives you the best patterns I don't know which tubes those come with. You probably don't want to use the turkey tube nor a rifled tube made for slugs if using buckshot. You will probably find it works best with either IC or Mod tubes. If it did not come with those tubes I'd buy some. The gun itself is fine.

yes it is threaded for choke tubes and yes all i have right now are the
tky and the rifle tubes

Get an Improved Cylinder choke tube, a sleeve of #4 Buckshot (#1 Buckshot if you live out in the sticks), a box of slugs, and never look back...

In that case I'd buy an IC tube for buckshot and call it good. With that and possibly a modified tube you have a very versatile gun. A little short for most bird hunting, but it could be pressed into duty for everything in an emergency.

Nordic Components makes a very nice mag tube extension for the BPS shotgun. I use their +6 extension tube on my 26" BPS and I can get 9 rounds in the tube. The only thing that sucks about the installation is that you need to file off the rolled edge on the end of the factory tube in order for the extension to work.

I'd opt for a 10 ga BPS just for the hell of it... cut down that goose barrel :)

One never knows until they shop around. My last purchase was closet kept Mossberg 500ATP8S with SureFire P6 Classic flashlight attached to tube with steel clamp. The price for the package was surprisingly low $150. While I was not looking for a shotgun the price was just too good to pass up.

All my pump guns are BPSs, including the black one by the master bath door. It indeed makes sense to have the HD gun function just like the others.

Is it true that the BPS is a copy of the Ithaca 37? To me the 37 always seemed stronger, better balanced, and much smoother/faster than the 870 or any other pump -- and you could slam-fire it, keeping the trigger pressed while working the pump so each round fired as soon as it chambered. A John Browning design, by the way. Great guns.
