I will be buying either Glock 17/19 or 22/23 for my sons and future sons in law for general personal defense. I want to have them in hand in case they are not available when they come of age. I will also be buying a 23 for myself - my first Glock.

What do you recommend for my boys and future sons in law? Yes - there will also be good shotguns set aside with their names on them too.

A gun for a dowry, that is just fantastic.

On a serious note, I will say either the 17 or the 22 based on my experience. I prefer the larger grip versus that of the 19/23.

You can't go wrong with any of them. I have 17/19's, and will never part with them. I like the 9mm's.

The 19 is good all round. My wife likes it better than a smaller 26. Fits my hand better than any of the others. I have 7 Glocks and the 23 is my least favorite.

While the 9mm is our mil standard right now, the 40 S&W is what almost every gov agency uses (yes I know there are others), so it is found most everywhere. I solved my own dilemma by buying both...in full and mid size... :)
As for the Glock platform, it is a great general purpose pistol. Aftermarket parts are everywhere. It isn't a 1911, but the trigger is the same every pull, and it goes BANG every time you pull the trigger.

I'd shoot one of each and then make my decision, at least one in 9mm and one in .40 S&W. At least with the 23 you can put a conversion barrel on it and make it a 9mm. I just don't like a .40 but strangely, I love the 10mms.

I think that the Glock family of 40S&W pistols recoil mo' harshly than other similar pistols, and suffer when shot next to their 9mm brethren. I favor the 17 and 19 over the 22 and 23, and I have the ability to choose from any of them.

And I will second the notion that the 20/21 platform, in Gen4 guise, is worth a look. I also prefer to shoot my 20 over my 22.....

Which Glock?

I have a G22 and like it a lot. I've fired a friends G23 and find the recoil a little more harsh. Unless they need a carry gun go with the full sized .40. In 9mm I'd go with the G19. I recently picked up a G17 for my wife and it's very mild mannered.

Glock makes a fine, reliable pistol. They will shoot virtually anytype ammo and the finish holds up very well. The choice of caliber is totally up to you. I finally bought a model 19 Gen 4 several months ago and I'm very happy with it. It's easy to clean and performs very well.

I like 9mm pistols so my Glocks are G34, G19 and a couple G26 mini guns.
The .45s and 10mm just don't seem comfortable in most peoples hands, even in the slim frame versions.
Nothing wrong with the .40s if you like the caliber.

personally I didn't care for the 19s and 23s, my problem is the finger grooves on them are too squashed so I personally would stick with the 17 22 26 and 27 depending on if you want 9mm or 40.

Just watch, you'll get a bunch of Glocks for the son in laws, only to find out they like 1911's and Sigs.

For a Glock for the wife I went with the G19 gen4 9mm.

In the twilight of my policin' days, I have settled upon a G17 and G19 as my serious off-the-clock concealed-carry guns. I had hoped to carry the G17 as my duty pistol, buying it in 2012 when my chief almost signed-off on a policy allowing 9mm as an alternative duty pistol cartridge. (We had gone all-.40 for uniformed personnel in 1997. Lately, however, snappy .40 recoil is starting to torture my arthritic wrist/hand.)

I was a believer in the .40 S&W during its early days, when expanding-bullet technology was not as advanced as today. These days, I doubt the .40 has a significant edge over the 9mm, with premium JHP ammo. Glock had some growing pains with their .40 models, and having personally experienced some of that during the 2002-2004 time period, prompting my switch to a SIG duty pistol, I feel better with 9mm in Glocks. (The problems with .40 Glocks have almost certainly been solved by now.)

For Glock, I'd say get the 9mm.

How big do you think they'll grow to be? I ended up being 6'2" and built like a tank from a 5'9" father and a 5'3" mother, both of average build. I much prefer the 17 because I have huge hands. Unless you're a midget, they oughta get along fine with a full size.

Heck - I prefer the 1911 - it's what I carry. I thought a Glock would be easier to teach to possible neophyte sons-in-law. Plus - it's tough to find a good 1911 for 5 bills.

My oldest boy is nearly 17 and handles a 1911 just fine. He wants a Glock though - he has much to learn. My daughters shoot too, though just .22s at this point.

I have a gen IV 19 and 22 as well as a gen III 21. My father also has a gen III 23 which I've had ample time with. I think the 19 is the best option for an all around use gun. It's small enough to carry concealed without too much effort and the ammo is cheaper than .40. It's also more suitable for those who are adverse to the higher recoil of a .40. Just get some spare mags to go with it too as they became extremely rare during the last panic. Yeah, .40 is a more effective round to neutralize a threat but with modern ammo the gap is probably smaller than most think in standard barrel lengths. Not to mention, follow up shots are easier to make with a 9 mm and three center mass hits with a 9 mm are likely to be more effective than two from a .40.

Of those options, I vote G19 hands down.

I own and G19 and a G23 and I prefer shooting the 9mm more without a doubt. I like .40s&w more out of larger/longer/heavier guns.

I've put tens of thousands of rounds through my Glocks, and I really like 'em. However, I have no use AT ALL for .40 S&W Glocks. I'd strongly suggest the G19 for your stated purposes...that'd be for you and your progeny.
