What's the most expensive CCW gun you've carried, or have seen carried? I've always heard not to carry expensive guns. Carrying is rough on them, and if you ever are forced to use it, you might not get it back.

Still, I once met someone who used a stainless Kimber Compact 1911 as their CCW. Talk about pricey...

Nighthawk 9mm 1911 I saw a guy carrying one and I asked him about it so we where outside near our cars he unloaded it and said he look if you want and I did the fit an finish were awesome and the tigger pull broke like glass he said even 3 pounds like he said why own it if I ain't going to carry it

A Kimber Compact 1911 is designed and marketed to be carried

Me thinks if you have to use it, getting the gun back is the least of your concerns.
Exactly.

I have never understood the concept of carrying a cheap(er) handgun solely for the reasons that (1) it might get "be rough on it but especially (2) "you might not get it back."

If you have to use the doggone thing, it's done its job! I carry what I know to be reliable and what I shoot best. Sometimes, that's an expensive 1911 that may have been rung up to the tune of $1300 to $2700. Most often, I like a Colt's LW Commander "Wiley Clapp" or a SIG in .45 or 9mm ... I am not in the slightest worried about carry wear or having one sitting in a police evidence locker for a couple years.

I get that some folks just plain can't budget for a quality handgun, but you gotta buy the best you can afford. And it still strikes me as ironic when I see folks driving $50,000 SUVs or trucks, smoke a couple packs a day at 9 bucks a pop, who pack $300 pistols ...

Kimbers aren't that expensive really. Really I don't consider a carry pistol to be "expensive" until you get over the $2000 price range.

I've paid over $1000 for two of my 1911s (Colt CCO and Springfield EMP) because that's what I wanted. Two more of my guns (Colt New Agent and HK P30) were just under $1000.

I'm not going to carry a cheap gun just because I'm worried about damaging or losing them, I'm gonna buy what I want within my budget.

It costs $50,000+ to shoot some punk.

That's why there's so many of them who remain "un-ventilated". The fees to lawyers, (civil and criminal) bondsmen, lost work, harrsment of your family, having to move, etc, can be 10x that much, too. So "losing' a $1000 pistol is nothing. You need at least $5000 worth of training to be worth a hoot with it, and at least $1000 per year spent on reloading components to stay good with it (along with a lot of dryfire and Airsoft practice).

Sure it's a $1000+ gun. There's a reason for that. It's a lot more than just an expensive toy. What price are you putting on the lives of those you protect with the gun you carry?
Carry the best you can afford.

Yes and no. To the extent that it FUNCTIONALLY changes anything, this argument holds water.
Otherwise the notion that a more expensive gun will necessarily perform better than a less expensive gun is a false dichotomy.

Does someone who is a high-level shooter with a Glock value his family any less if he carries the Glock instead of an Ed Brown 1911? Of course not. The monetary value of the gun has nothing to do with how much one values the lives it protects.
If a gun works, and shoots well for the shooter, that's the part that functionally matters.

To answer the question, most expensive I ever carried was a Marc Morganti (Gemini Customs) Ruger SP101. I had about $850-900ish in that gun. I carried it because I liked it and it shot as well as anything else I had at the time.

These days it's a Ruger Speed Six i bought used for $350. I shoot it just as well. The people it protects are the same that were protected by the SP101 and I value them just as highly.

Mine aren't cheap, they are inexpensive. Big difference. I carry either a Ruger LCP ($269) or Beretta Nano ($339) and both are reliable.

True, but my point is that it's a $1000+ gun.

For the record, I carry a $500 Beretta PX4 and a $350 Bersa Thunder CC. Price has nothing to do with it. They are the right carry guns for me.

However if you carry $1,000 gun for 5 years, how much is that a day? Less than $1. My guess is everyone here spends more than $1 a day on things much less important than their carry gun

I carried a Les Baer 1911 for about a year, and then decided to get something smaller and cheaper. I sold the Baer and bought an AMT backup and a couple of other guns!

Now I carry a S&W model 60 or a Springfield 1911 and I feel just as comfortable with them. It's not the price tag, it's about performance and reliability, and the less expensive guns work just as well.

I favor the Crimson Trace laser equipped Kimber but I also carry the Ruger LCP, LC9 and a several other, totally reliable, less expensive guns.

Personally I'll spend whatever it takes to do the job.
If the gun is over $1,000, that's OK.
What I won't usually do is spend thousands to...........
As my Wife used to say, "Impress the other kids".

Christmas I gave a couple lady friends two CT laser equipped Kimbers.

Ultra Covert II. Bottom center.
And the Ultra Tactical. Top right.

One lady is carrying the Covert. The other lady doesn't have her CHL yet.
I would feel kind of bad if they didn't carry the guns.
I gave the guns to them to carry for their protection, not to leave in the safe.

Don't laugh, but the most expensive handgun I've carried is a Glock. I have no problem carrying a $1000+ pistol (if I had one), if I buy something it needs to have a use such as a carry piece. As far as losing it for awhile, just another reason to buy a handgun!:D

I've often wondered if it ever came to a true self defense shooting, I became the victor, and was carrying a gun that I didn't want the police to #@&% up, I would be very tempted to secure the weapon, and have my attorney present while I release it to the prosecutor, or court, or police supervisor (my last choice) when they draft an agreement for its proper return, unscathed, should I be found to have committed no crime during the defense of my life. Not the usual procedure, and the cop shop would be pissed as hell, but evidence is evidence, and as such is MINE until I release it to them. Any judge that would like to COMPEL me to hand it over could find me in contempt, but that is not a criminal charge, and if my attorney is worth ANYTHING, it would be a simple matter. People do not always come forward, people do not always give up evidence initially, and the police do not always get to have it their way. The police do not intimidate me (I worked as cop for 20 years), and I now have the time to make my point: my property will not be trashed for the sake of inconsiderate, reckless, or power abusive public officials. Your submission to the powers that be might be different than mine. The more people that stand up to abuses, the fewer we will have. I really don't mind getting arrested for this. Hell, they are going to "arrest" a citizen in this situation anyway; you may as well stand ground and go for the promise to treat your property with respect. I always had that in mind when I handled other peoples property, and it really isn't that hard, or too much to ask. I didn't tolerate other officers abusing property OR people, either.

how are you going to get the police to sign a draft concerning the return condition? I don't think you could, what would happen is you would get yourself in unneeded trouble (contempt, obstruction, ECT), which is a silly thing to do over a material item. Not wise advise IMHO. That is a good way to get charges added.

I realize you were a cop, so you do know more about this than I do, but I just don't see how you could get them to sigh an agreement

My most expensive gun is a Les Baer SRP, and it's on my CCW permit - along with two Colt 1911s, a Shield, a Sig 2022, a S&W Airweight, and four Glocks. My G26 usually gets the nod, but it's nice to be able to transport the 1911s locked and loaded, as God and JMB intended.

I saw an man carrying an original Colt SAA in 44-40. He said his grandpa bought it new in 1897, "It kill't a lot of folks back then and if things keep going the way they are in this country, it'll kill a bunch more."
It looked like it was in fine shape for a original, holster worn, Colt.
I imagine it would fetch several thousand especially if his g-paw was some sort of lawman

most Expensive , ? I've seen some old Colts that looked like safe queens well over a grand , some with gold inlay , , custom grips ect , I don't know of anyone that carries a gun under $500 so I guess we need to know what is Expensive ? I carry a S&W1911 ($1150) my wife carries a Sig p238 Lady ($700) on a real cold day I'll carry a S&W 19-5 (4' 357mag) about a $600 gun .

I carry a $325 SP 101 3" .357 everyday, not cheap, but not exactly expensive either. Now that colder weather is upon us here, I'm going to start carrying my 4" Colt Trooper everyday with a heavier coat, just like the feel of that weapon secured on me, I shoot it a lot better than the SP 101. Price hasn't any bearing on what I carry, I paid $325 for that Trooper out of a pawn shop, besides my Python, its the most accurate weapon{s} I own.

I've known several guys that carry H&K P7s (and I don't mean the police trade in PSPs that flooded the market a few years ago ... although I know people that carry those too).

If I had a P7M10 it would likely become my EDC piece, despite the ~$3000 price tag.

I carried a SS Kimber for quite, got rid of it because Crimson Trace Grips were not available for the gun I had, and it only held six in the magazine.
