Recently traded for a .357 revolver. I was hoping someone could give me some info on approximate age and value. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1389753239.331266.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1389753255.246824.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1389753269.730011.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1389753279.447466.jpg

Most Highway Patrolman (better known as Model 28) are matte blue. There were a few factory nickel plated, but IIRC, they had departmental markings (Florida Highway Patrol?) and were satin nickel.

Yours appears to have been heavily repolished and then nickeled. This is detrimental to any collector value. Should still be a solid shooter.

Probably the best choice in a .357. They are designed to shoot. Yours is a great gun for that.

The N5xxxxx range was used from 1978-1980. With a low serial number I would guesstimate 1978.
Good trade. In fact, as long as its mechanically sound, very good trade. It's probably worth 2 new 10-22s.

It may be worth a call to S&W to see if hey can tell you whether the nickel finish is factory original or not.

Just an idea.

Rob

AFAIK, factory S&W nickel plated guns always got an uppercase N stamped on the rear face of the cylinder.

Pretty shiny. The 50 known nickel HPs in 1979 were brush nickel like the brush blue of the standard model. The FHP guns were polished but had 5" barrels and are vanishingly scarce.

I found a picture of a factory "change of finish" on a HP that looked like the OP's.
(S&W did not plate the hammer and trigger, so this one at least LOOKS right.)
