Anyone know of any good (AK47) gunsmiths? I have a mag catch that I believe is mounted too low. If I'm unable to fix it myself I was wondering who out there can do it? Or is it even simple enough for a local gunsmith?

What do you mean by "mounted too low"?

The mag catch is pretty simle and it's all attached via rivets, so I'd bet at least one local smith could handle it, regardless of the exact issue. Best way to find out is to ask.

^^^ Yeah. Also what type of AK? If its a converted Siaga 7.62x39 the issue is not the mounting, but the locking lever is too long (made that way on purpose for the factory 10 round mags) and needs to be filed down about 1mm to complete the conversion.

Another possibility is to trade someone for a mag catch from a saiga 7.62x39 which is longer and you could fit it until your magazines lock in correctly

What makes you think the catch is too low?

Have you tried more than one magazine in it?

Note that Valmet and Galil mags, while visually identical to AK mags, have the front lug a bit higher than an AK mag due to the slant cut on the front of the receiver. Interchanging AK and Galil mags sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

I am betting the mag catch is too long. It happened to me on a brand new Saiga 12 that FIME Group converted. I took it back to the shop I bought it at, they took it in the back and filed it down and brought it back out in about a minute.
