Rem-Oil?

I like it. I had a pistol, Springfield XD9, sit in an evidence room for three years, and all it had was Rem-Oil on the barrel, spring and trigger control. When I picked it up from them, zero rust was on my gun, and the powder was still in the barrel.

I just cleaned a used rifle with it and the Rem bore cleaner yesterday. I am sure it will stay rust free as my other firearms have.

When using the same rag for years it doesn't cost much as the rag gets soaked, and works to wipe down the outside of the firearm.

I also use Balistol some times on my stainless revolvers. It works good, also.

I used it for several decades to protect a half-dozen dormant safe queens.

They would get rubbed down with Rem-Oil (circa 1980s formula) every 3 years or so, inside and out. Not a speck of rust.

Don't know if the formulation has changed.

Actually, it has the word " cleans" written right on the front of the bottle/can.

Huh? Checking... The can I'm looking at doesn't have that word exactly, but that's a quibble. It does say it's for cleaning on the front of the can and calls it a cleaner on the back (so I stand corrected), both of which surprise me. It doesn't say anything about containing any solvents, which is sort of a requirement for a real gun cleaner.

Also amusing is it says it's the "same great lubricant since 1913", but also says it contains Teflon, which was discovered in 1938.

Yep, can says "cleaning" and pump bottle says "cleans".....Personally, I don't rely on it to clean beyond wiping some loose soot off.

G96

Recently I've been using G96 CLP because it smells so good. Don't know how well it holds up but it sure passes the sniff test as compared to Breakfree CLP.

REM OIL no way

I like Remington products so I stocked up on the spray Rem Oil. I clean all my weapons every couple of months and the last time I used Rem Oil exclusively on everything. When I pulled them out to clean them this last time the oil had turned to a sticky film that locked up or bound the actions to some degree on every weapon. I had to completely tear down the actions and strip the Rem Oil film. I then went back to my old standard that I have used for over 40 years (3 in 1). This stuff from Remington went in the trash.

Some gun manufacturers, FN being one of them, specifically recommend against using lubricants with PTFE in them. The reason for this is PTFE (Teflon) melts at about 500F. This can cause it to gum up or burn on to part exposed to heat. For example, the gas piston in a shotgun could be caused to malfunction if it was lubricated with a PTFE oil.

I have made a witches brew of my own.

I believe I saw this mix in another post somewhere

50% Dexron ATF
25% STP (very thick oil)
25% 5-30w Mobil 1

it is a homemade CLP! STP to really coat the metal, ATF to help clean, mobil1 synthetic oil to last.

We shall see!

My State Police agency traded 30 yr old Rem 870s for new 14" Rem 11-87 Semi-auto shot guns. Biggest FUBAR ever! The cases of gratis RemOil just gummed up the works, guns failed to cycle low-recoil )) Buck loads as promised-REM Reps said use 2 O-rings! NOT !. Platform is a POS nightmare, takes power tools to clean the bores because the barrels are too short for the type of action. We went thru 200 O-rings in 4 months in a 75 Agy agency due to cleaning/dirty action issues. My personal Rem 1100 was bought in 1980, used in deer/duck/dove shoots still today and I didn't even realize they shared the same O-ring, mine has never failed probably 1500 rds and counting! And I use Hoppe's, not Rem Oil, even though it was available free for the last 15 yrs.

I use it for my lansky knife sharpener. I use militec oil on my guns and never had a problem. I like the ATF/stp/mobile 1 idea!

An engineer with one of the big four oil/chemical refining operations and he was also a gun guy conducted a test to see which commercial and industrial rust/corrosion resistant products were the best for protecting firearms. Using corrosion testing protocols including outside weather exposure he concluded 3in1 oil was the best. His test included using industry specific treatments.

I've heard HOPPE'S #9 is not to be used on nickeled or chromed guns because getting it on the finish can cause an attack on the copper base plating used to bind the nickel to the steel.

Hopefully you saw it in one of my posts. I try to talk up this particular mixture every chance I get. I learned about it from a National Guard armorer at the public range I frequent. I mixed my first batch 20+ years ago and I have yet to be disappointed by it.

Sure Elkins45! I have seen it in many variations with the Dexron ATF specified. Just used it on 2 p226 9mm and they cleaned up really well! good bore snake cleaner and then just a light coat over all!

When you get to mixing it up, you have a pretty good stash of gun oil! As long as I dont spill it, I'll have oil for many, many, generations!

rem oil

I have used Mobile 1 20w50 and CLP for many years for my lube/rust prevention needs. At one time, I used a mobile1/atf/clp mix that worked ok. Getting old and lazy now thus mobile 1 and clp.

UPdate on home made gun lube and clp

OK,

I really like this mix of %50 dexron-VI ATF, %25 STP oil treatment, %25 Mobil1 5-30w synthetic oil. It works great!

Compared to hp-10, which on Amazon prime costs $12 for 4oz. or $3 per oz

When you buy the components for the homemade gun oil/lube on Amazon prime they cost

STP- $4.99-15 oz or .34 oz
ATF- $4.00-32 oz or .13 oz
OIL- $6.00-32 oz or .15 oz

15 oz of STP, 7.5 of ATF, 7.5oz of OIL, makes 30oz of gun oil.

Total cost of 30oz = $7.21 or .24 per oz!

You still have enuf ATF and OIL to make 3 more batches, just get $15 of STP and you now have 120 oz of home made gun oil for $30!

.24 cents per ounce, homemade

3.00 per ounce HP-10.

Your call.

be safe
