I'm removing the barrel from my Savage 11XP hunter as soon as I get it and will be replacing it with a heavy barrel. My question is I have a guy wanting to sell me his 24inch factory take off that shoots better than 1/2moa with factory loads and his load data for more accurate loads for $65 should I expect much more out of a aftermarket barrel like a Shillen(which is what I was considering) to net the price difference?

It depends on how many rounds are down the barrel, but for $65 it's probably worth giving it a shot. Krieger and those quality barrels will sometimes (but certainly not always) put out a 1/4 MOA barrel, but really a solid 1/2 MOA gun is pretty decent, especially with factory loads.

Then again you have to ask, if it was shooting 1/2 MOA with factory ammo why did he replace it???

From what he said " I have not shot a savage in a long time and I currently have 6 Bartlein barrels that I have setup just for my AI rifles that I pretty much shoot exclusively now. So I have no use for the factory tube. Other reputable shooters have witnessed the accuracy of this barrel."

For $65.00 from a known source I would jump on it. If it just shoots average you could recoup your investment.

Agree with browningguy, begs the question why does he want to replace it now? Also occurred to me that finish reaming may be a factor here, but then I'm no expert on barrel changes.

Sometimes people are willing to give you a really good deal. They may have more money than they need and they feel like they're doing something for the sport or something. I've had people give me great deals like that.

Now why pull off a brand new barrel?? It may shoot just as well as these take barrel. Then decide if your wanting a serious match rifle or just a nice plinker. I have a steven 200 in 223 that's still has its stock barrel that I recrowned at home and upgraded the trigger as its not an accuratrigger and its good for 1/2" or a bit less with factory fodder. My hunting rifle is a ways better than that . What are you expecting . An accurate rifle is more than just a barrel.

Follow kreigers break in directions or use some tubs break in bullets on that stock barrel and then decide if your rifles barrel worth keeping or changing to another stock barrel !!

A free barrel is nice but heavy does not make accurate so your rifle , your money.

My new gun has a pencil barrel that's why i bought the bull varmint bartel and I may put my new bartel on my .270 later or I may sell it as new without a round down the tube

Scenario......so im at the range and some guy is telling me how his rifle shoots through the same hole at 100 yds....then when we walk up to get the targets his rifle suddenly shoots 5" groups.....hmmmm. Not to worry cuz that doesnt happen all the time.....maybe 40% WATCH OUT FOR FISH STORIES!!
