A U.S. newspaper conglomerate has considered building state-by-state databases of people who have the right to carry concealed firearms.

Civitas Media, which owns 88 newspapers in 12 states and more than 100 total publications, is planning to use public records requests to build their databases, according to an internal Civitas email obtained by the Buckeye Firearms Association in Ohio.

This needs to be stopped.

One commenter had the following suggestion:

We need to immediately determine who these people are, which papers they represent, then compile a complete list of each paper's employees including their names, addresses, phone #s, kids' names, the cars they drive, etc and have them ready to upload online. Then, if they make the slightest move to compile/publish lists, BOOM! - all their personal info goes live. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. Better to be prepared and able to react quickly. And if these people complain about what we're doing, we can do what the feds do everyday - say, we are just compiling a list. We have no plans to do anything with it.

That should be done to ANY news group that wants to give criminals names and addresses where they can easily find guns.

(MODS - If this should be in Legal or Activism instead, please move)

This is the list and locations of the papers they own:

yes, this sort of "rock with note thru the window" sort of warning is a great idea. The wannabe tyrants never let up, so neither can we. They want to enslave or kill you, never doubt it.

I'm under the impression it is not illegal to use public information in a lawful manner such as a database. It may be considered an invasion of privacy to start taking pictures of people's kids and then posting that information.

I agree we should use public records in a similar fashion and then also attach images for Google Maps and such but it may be going too far to start attaching images of people's kids. Sure the Conglomerate will claim it's being targeted and its people being put in danger because some nut may start killing the folks that work there but that logic can also be used for the mass publishing of lawful gun owners as well.

We have to walk this line very carefully and make sure no illegal things go on if this gets done. It's easy to get arrested for stalking if one isn't careful, even if they are a Private Investigator. Granted it's easy to beat the charge but still that's money one shouldn't have to spend.

I'm all for it, but we should put it in the form of a Watch Group and try to get it a non-profit status as well. And not just the media but also the other antigun groups as well. Play with us, we'll play back, and we won't kiss you first.

I would hope that all gun owners who live the areas where they have these papers will write TONS of Letters to the Editor about this harassment and the dangers it could cause to all gun owners with carry permits

I see a large class action lawsuit looming. When were finished suing the crap out of them, they will be lucky if they can just sell toilet paper.

"Suing the crap out of them" for what?:scrutiny:
Publishing an article that contains public information is not illegal.

After you finish paying your lawyers for a frivolous suit.....you;ll be selling your guns to pay for toilet paper.

Glad to see the "project" was shelved. I'm wondering what they were going to do with the lists. The report stated that Civitas claimed that they had no intentions of publishing any of the info they obtained. Really???

Kinda disturbed me when I first saw the report as I have a grandson living not 10 miles from their headquarters in Davidson,NC. Any of you guys from that area know anything more about these people?

QUOTE: ..be lucky they can sell toilet paper!

In my area there are 3 "news papers" that are owned and controlled by the same family. They all publish and more importantly choose to IGNORE the same issues ie Cuomo`s No Place for Conservatives Rant (totally ignored).
Recently they all switched to a thinner, flimsier paper that could easily be used as toilet paper! Perhaps that will be those newspaper`s future- good only for toilet paper but unable to compete with the likes of CHARMIN etc! They`re already distributing wholesale lots of manure! :scrutiny:

Here is some info from their site.

Centrally located in Davidson, North Carolina on the shores of Lake Norman, Civitas Media encompasses over 100 publications, many of which have served their communities for over a century. Civitas, Latin for “community” or citizen” is a union of four media entities formerly known as Heartland Publications, Freedom Central, Impressions Media and Ohio Community Media. Civitas, which employs over 1400 associates across 11 states including North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee, publishes 35 daily, 28 weekend editions and 63 weekly publications for a combined circulation of over 1.6 million.

However read the following below. In order for the newspapers to compile a list of state by state using just using "public databases" it would be impossible to do. As 40 states "do not make data available about who owns a gun or has received a state permit to carry a gun".

"Forty states plus the District of Columbia do not make data available about who owns a gun or has received a state permit to carry a gun, according to Sunlight's examination of state gun laws. There are ten states that do make data available to the public. Our information is based on a compilation of gun laws by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and on interviews with officials and activists in the states. "

If they are going to compile this list for "state-by-state databases of people who have the right to carry concealed firearms" , they would have to use non public sources.

So either they will limited to compiling data for 10 states. Or use other means to get the rest of the information for the 40 other states. What other means will they use to get the rest of the information? Taking non public information in order to compile the list of all 50 states? You tell me if people will get upset if that happens.

Appears the idiot publishers just realized some state laws prevent those disclosures and decided against it.

Reference please.

If they're going to start using the 1st Amendment to publish addresses of people using their 2nd Amendment rights, then perhaps we should publish the addresses of the people publishing addresses.

Maybe they could start publishing the addresses of people using their 4th and 5th Amendment rights too.

I really hate how out of touch and self "righteous" the media has become. They think they're untouchable when they advocate for a reduction of our rights.

The disclosure of CCW holders in Arizona would be illegal. But with the situation in Maryland with how they obtained the CCW holder information from Florida, who knows what information may obtainable from where.

It was a trial balloon and it is shelved only for a while. They will not stop and that is why I never will get a carry permit I told my friends about this years ago. They can scan your license plate now and find your carry permit

If a CCP holder pays a fee to get a license to carry and the State does not tax the whole population to issue CC Permits, how does the license information become public??
Just askin...
Joe

VCDL has already been down this road with The Roanoke Times.

I'm not sure what was the final straw AFA TRT deciding to do a 180 on publishing a database. There's a good chance that a number of folks (and their lawyers) sending a letter to TRT letting them know should a crime ever be committed that was based on the publishing of the database, they would be sued by the gun owner and they would make sure that anyone harmed would be forwarded the information so they might also sue TRT.

Fer example - if someone has their firearms stolen, and when caught, the criminal says he picked his target based on info from TRT's published database, the victim would sue.
If said criminal committed a crime with a gun he stole (shot / murdered a 3rd party), they could also expect lawsuits from those folks.

Very soon after this info was forwarded to TRT, they took the database down.
