Tomorrow I'm picking up a howa 1500 in 22-250 that I traded for. I'll have to get new glass for it and have seriously been thinking about a prostaff 5 4.5-15x40.
Coming from a cheap 50mm BSA anything will be an improvement. My lgs has some good prices on a prostaff, is the jump up to the 5 worth the extra?
Does anyone have any experience with them?

I mostly target shoot and coyote hunt with it. I do like to have 12+ magnification available for target/small varmint shooting. The easy zero turret appeals to me too.

Is there anything else in the ~$300 range I need to look at.

I hope this helps you out.Nikon just started a long range promotion, any scope that goes to 12 or higher in magnification is reduced. The PROSTAFF 5 that you are looking at, 3.5-14x50, $80 instant savings. I don't do any Sales for Nikon, just like to help guy's out when I can. Nikonpromo.com

That Nikon promo (or another one) is on the Prostaff 4-12, too. That might be a deal.

Hey, bman940 -
Is the prostaff 5 a better scope than the Prostaff, or is it the same quality scope with more bells and whistles?

Just went and checked. Natchezss has the 4.5-14x40 buckmaster for $240. That might be the way to go.

Hey, bman-
Is Nikon discontinuing the Buckmaster scopes?

Has, The PROSTAFF 5 is a better scope. Very clear, excellent light gathering and parallax adjustment. A scope I like even better is the MONARCH 3. Better glass coating's for better clarity and color recognition. I have used one with the BDC reticle and Spot On to ping steel at 500 yards. This scope is also included in the promotion and one I would definitely suggest looking at. The MONARCH platform is Nikon's top of the line.

Thanks, guys. I ended up getting the prostaff 5. I haven't gotten to shoot it yet, but I think I'll be quite happy with the scope. Hopefully the gun shoots!

Prostaff 5

I know you are gonna love the flexibilty for reaching out there, not to mention the clarity and light gathering. I look forward to pics and a range report.

I was looking at scopes for my Tikka in .30-06 last fall. I told myself to spend whatever on the right scope. I was looking at Zeiss, Leupold and Nikon.

Looking through a bunch of them, my eyes thought the ProStaff 5 (2.5-10x40, Nikoplex) was by far the best. The guy at the LGS came out from behind the counter to look through it (first time) and was shocked with the clarity and eye relief. Great glass for the money.

Got out just as the snow started picking up. Got it sighted in temporarily at least. Only 100yds, but I prefer 235yd zero.
Anyway, I was VERY pleasantly surprised.

I realized last night that I had no ammo that would work. I've only neck sized for years, and the rounds I had loaded would not chamber. I sized and loaded up some 50gr. V-max on top of 34gr. of Varget.

This is the result of my starting load. uploadfromtaptalk1391563146705.jpg

That was 1.01" and I could tell I pulled the low one. Can't wait for a little better weather and some time to do a ladder test with some neck sized cases and see if I can get a one hole @ 100yds.

Very nice. Check out Nikon's Spot On Ballistic Program. I pulled this off for you to look at, I think the numbers will be very close to what you are getting right now. Check the zero Spot On gives you. So much for global warming don't you think? I'm down here in Tx and we have 22 deg., windchill of 8 and snow in the forecast for Thur snd Fri. I just can't up for a range day in the snow, now hunting int he snow if a different story.

I have checked out the Spot On program. Not sure I want to split with $4.99 for the app, though. It's getting pretty mixed reviews. The online version works quite nicely, however. After I get a good load developed I'll definitely print up a couple of range cards. I'll have to see if I know anyone with a Chrony. It's been on my "to buy" list for a long time, but other stuff keeps creeping in front of it.

The on line version now works with Android and Apple products so unless you go some place with no cell reception you will be just fine. Honestly I have not seen anything but positive reviews for Spot On. It is constantly growing thanks to request's from you guys. If there is something you think Spot On is lacking let me know and I'll see if we can get it added. I've used the program to shoot soda cans sized targets at 623 yards.

From the way I understand it, the Prostaff 5 is taking the place of the Buckmasters line. Is that correct?

My LGS (family owned & operated since the '60s) said it was meant to be an addition to their line of scopes, between the 'regular' Prostaff and Monarch.

Nikon still has the Buckmaster line on their site?
