Now that I have a mosion nagant I need ammo.

As far as opening the cans goes, just make a small hole with a screw driver or something. then get a grip on it with a pair of needle nose pliers and role it open like a sardine can. It took me a few frustrating opening sessions to figure this out.

As far as what the best surplus ammo is... I can't tell you. All of the surplus ammo I have purchased shoots great. One of the cans I have has a stamp from 1937 on it and it still works like new. In fact, the can was covered in dried algae making me think it was in a flood at some point but that is the whole point behind those frustratingly difficult to open cans:)

I just clean the barrel fastidiously after each use.

I did what Schwing did with the punch a hole then using needle nose pliers the first can I opened without the opener.

Might I suggest gunbot.net before you buy? Will generally find the best deals at that moment. Obviously shipping comes into play but last I checked it had spam cans for $79 + $20 shipping I think.

I love Mosins, favorite rifles for some reason. :D

You would think the shipping would be cheaper but its not. Its cheaper to buy from PSA than J&G when it comes to shipping. Very strange that its cheaper to ship it from S.C. than AZ.

Military ammo was never meant to be "match grade" .... but it's tough to argue with 25 cents a round or less.

However, IF you want better shooting ammo, get non-corrosive ammo, AND want to save your shoulder, I have one word for you:

RELOAD

Not hard to do, not expensive to get started. I use about 3/4 the powder charge in a mil-surp 7.62 x 54R with a 180 gr bullet and get great results that shoots a lot "softer". I don't need to put holes in Nazis at 2000 meters, just holes in paper at 100.

If you were buying 10K rounds, it might be worth a road trip; TX > AZ and return.

You may look at Sportsman's Guide. They have a free shipping special every couple of weeks and a 880 round crate is $200. Their buyer's club is $30 a year and saves you 5% on ammo.

if you look closer you'll find the "free shipping" usually excludes ammo.

C'mon guys, a little common sense here. If you order 500 pounds of ammo, it simply can't exceed the weight limit for the packaging. If 70 pounds is the limit for UPS then EACH PACKAGE can't exceed 70 pounds. Ship it in 8 packages of about 65 pounds each. No problem.

Or if you really want to order a lot of ammo, have it shipped by motor freight (common truck like Roadway) and the freight should be about half the UPS or less. I've done this several times. Same on shipping primers and powder. No hazmat charges on motor freight.

And there's no limit on how much ammo you can order except your checkbook.

I don't think a shoulder would make it through 10,000 rounds. I still have ammo left from my initial purchase and I'm in no hurry to take my M 44 out any time soon. I made the mistake of firing it last on my last outing. After a few hundred rounds of .357 and 9mm, and 7.62x39 I was already tired. I did have a nice grouping with it, but our rifle range is short. I changed out the bolt to make it feel more American, but kept the original.

I would just purchase boxer rounds in the first place. I have a few hundred so when I see a box of 20 boxer rounds at a decent price I grab one.

I have purchased ammo through sportsman's guide a couple of times in the past 2 months and used their free shipping code. In fact they have a free shipping special going on right now. I put 880 rounds of 7.62x54R in my cart, added the free shipping code, and it worked. Then I put 10 cases of 880 rounds in my cart and added the free shipping code. It dropped the shipping charge but added a $20 charge for extra handling. Still not a bad deal and cheaper than I can purchase locally. Around here a spam can is $120 + 10% sales tax.

Well I'm almost finished cleaning this thing. I don't know if there was more gunk on this rifle or grease in a 5 gallon bucket but by the time I'm inished the ammo should be here.

Guess I'll just order it 2 cans at a time otherwise I'm afraid they will just leave it by the stairs and expect me to carry it up he stairs.

First of all, how did someone with the tag "Queen Of Thunder" just now discover a Mosin? Seems like that's a match made in heaven....

Regarding the can opener, there are several on Ebay right now from $11-$12.50. Another option is to do it yourself as at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--I3kLsaOho

440 round cans are $84.95 (priced for 2 or more) at Aimsurplus.com and they include a can opener if your order at least 2 cans.

Now thats easy. I shoot the 7.35 Carcano, the Swiss 7.5x55, the .303 British, 30-30, 30-40 Krag and the 300 Win Mag plus I'm in the market for a .338 Lapua. Not bad for a grandmother is it.

As to why I haven't considered one before now I don't know. I guess with what we have dealt with ammo wise this past year I thought it would be nice to have something I could afford to shoot. Of course I guess it really was a chance occurrence that when I went looking for 22lr at Big5 this past Wednesday only to find out they didn't get any that day I asked about the sale they were having on Mosin Nagants as I didn't see any. The manager said they had sold out and they could order one. He then remembered there was one in the back. As it turned out it was a Tula made one with the Hex receiver that was made in 1930 and had a 5 digit s/n under 1100. So I bought it. Thats how I ended up with my first Mosin Nagant.

I'd like to find a 91/59 now that I know they exist, it would be nice to have one of each.
