I was shopping steel targets, and had no idea they were so expensive! Does anyone know of a company that makes them more affordable for the average person?

I've been really happy w/ Bobcat steel. I think they are a mom and pop place and do it in the evenings. Prices aren't too bad and they've been great to deal with.

Hmm...the ads on my screen right now are for "jumping targets.com" and custommetalprod.com... I think they are using really good ads on this page at this time.

Caldwell makes some nice ones in AR-500 steel, which is what you really need.

Just to clarify. Bobcat makes all of their stuff out of ar-500 in either 3/8" or 1/2" thicknesses. They have pre made sizes and shapes or they'll do custom iiirc.

If you have access to a welder and are handy you can go to a scrap metal dealer and probably find everything you need to make cheap targets. Using mild steel will minimize ricochets but will require you to repair or rebuild them regularly if you are using center fire rifles to shoot them.

As Steel Horse Rider posted.......I just go to the steel yard and pick up some scrap whgen I need to and weld up what I need.....Yes when someone shoots my steel with his pistol AR it does punch holes but it makes no difference to me when I shoot the steel still goes twang when I hit it.

If you're shooting a pistol, mild steel works fine. I have an inspection plate from a dozer as a target.

For rifles, check out Big Dog Steel. They have an econo line and they're good targets at a decent price.

It's literally impossible to know exactly which forum to post every intricate, different question. I figured firearms and gear seemed a logical place to post.

not to pick nits, but the other 70,000 users seem to get it right more than 96% of the time. :) i'm sure you'll figure it out

but to answer your question, targets aren't expensive but shipping is. here are some places to look for cheap ones: (google their websites)
big dog steel (OH)
jc steel targets (WA)
jab's extreme steel (AL)
wideners (TN)

And steel targets are relevant as an accessory if you're not thinking about them in the context of competition, but they belong in one or the other.

I have steel hanging at home on my range because the net cost is cheaper than consumable targets (and I like the sound).

Be wary of people selling mild steel for targets. AR500 is far more durable and the bullets behave far more predictably impacting (and ricocheting off them).

As taliv pointed out, try to factor in the shipping since you are paying to ship a stack of steel afterall.

I'm very happy with the JC Steel targets I recently purchased. Only been to the range once with them, but Im impressed, and prices were definitely competitive. Sounds like they support a good cause as well.
