Hello to all. New to this forum but frequent other geek/nerd forums. On to question.

I been stocking up on ammo as I can. This is mostly at Walmart or something local but getting interested in buying off internet sites in bulk. I been watching a case of 250 rounds for a while. It was around $120 for 45 ACP hollow point. I noticed it dropped to $99 or so in the past day or two. It doesn't say anything about a sale so it makes me wonder, are ammo prices rising, leveling off or starting to drop a bit? I figure the folks here buy more ammo than I do so why not get opinions from folks who have watched the trends for a while. This is what I have been wanting to get:

http://www.selwayarmory.com/bvac45acp230grjacketedhollowpoint-new-250roundvaluepack.aspx

I had another brand picked out for about the same price per round but they don't take my card. Yea, changing banks soon as I can.

Reason for asking, I'm disabled so I try to save where I can. IF, big IF, prices are falling or leveling off, I'd like to wait a bit. If they are rising, I want to live on banana sandwiches this month and buy the ammo before it goes up again.

What are members here seeing on ammo prices? Up, down or pretty level?

Thanks!!

I order bulk reman for range work. Prices aren't quite back to pre-panic levels, but availability is good.

I agree, availability of *most* ammo is coming back, certainly not for 22LR tho. I haven't seen a box of it in so long that I suspect someone would have to point and tell me "that is it right there".

My question tho is whether to chance the price going back up on the ammo in the link. It doesn't say it is a sale but I don't know if prices are starting to drop a little or that is a temporary price drop. In other words, should I order at that price while I can or risk it going back up again and order later?

I know that ammo is not a popular brand like Remington or Hornady but based on reviews on more than one site, it seems to shoot pretty well. While I have been a long gun user for a while, pistols are sort of new. I sometimes want to mount a scope on my pistol. That's what I'm used to aiming with.

Keep the opinions coming. If enough folks think I better get while the getting is good, I need to order this before the weekend is over, price could go up on Monday.

That price breaks out to $20 for 50rnds of JHP which is a pre-panic price. How much is shipping? It sounds like a good enough deal to buy 250 or 500. I don't see prices dropping much from that price for the more popular calibers.

If the Ukraine issue keeps up and we see tension with Russia that lead to trade embargoes, then don't get too comfortable with prices at the moment. Removing any competition from an industry typical leads to higher prices..and in this case there will also be a shortage of supply...if fighting breaks out.

The prices are little more favorable and there is good supply with exception of 20ga BK shot and .22LR.

The removal of an overseas supplier will have effects on domestic pricing and supplies. That's not rocket science.

Where are we getting our smelted lead from now that the last U.S. lead smelter has shut down?

I would guess Canada.

I would not worry about current situation between Russia & Ukraine. The rise of Ukrainian Nationalism has been of concern in recent years. If Russians decide to eliminate some we should open few cans of beer order pizza and watch it on tv like the super bowl. No embargo against Russia should be contemplated.

That is a good price for JHP .45 ACP (assuming shipping is reasonable), but I don't know enough to know if it is credible SD ammo. Regardless I'd buy less expensive FMJ for non-SD purposes.

Not sure where you're at so, in a way it's all relative. I went to a gunshow today in central Texas where Most of the ammo was still at, or close to, panic prices. With .22lr being at the outrageous level. I mean charging retail + 10-15 percent on ammo. at a gunshow, I'm not buying. And from what I gathered, most others weren't either. Maybe a few months more and things will finally cool off.

The last U.S. smelter that made lead from virgin ore shut down but there are still plenty of smelters using recycled lead in the USA. 80% of the lead used in the US comes from recycled lead-acid batteries.

Didn't realize that. Thanks.

Going to try to reply to a few points here. I live in Mississippi. The shipping is about $18. If I ordered that ammo, the total would be $118.12. For 250 rounds, that's about 47c a round. That's pretty dang good for 45 ammo. Oh, I suspect a few of you have already figured out I'm from the south. Right? LOL

My plan, this is for mrvco, buy this ammo at some point, fire quite a few rounds to make sure it does well with my specific pistol. If it fires well with not a SINGLE hick-up, it goes in the 50 cal ammo can to use for slinging lead at whatever may be mean. If it has a problem of any kind, be it misfire, not ejecting right, hanging up somewhere or whatever, it gets used for target practice and also goes off my future buy list. It has good reviews and pretty much everyone that bought it says it shoots fine with no problems BUT I do plan to test the stuffin out of it for MYSELF. As we all know, each gun can have those subtle differences.

For future reference plmitch, I don't mind if a thread goes slightly off topic, especially on the topic that Bexar raised. That is related in a way to this topic because that will affect this issue I'm sure. No lead, ammo is going to get really pricey. No brainer. If you do start a new thread on something raised, please post a link so that I can follow it if it interests me. That topic would be one that I would certainly follow since I have been wondering about it. While I use forums at times, I am mostly used to mailing lists. I'm a bit of a old fart. ;) The numbers on the end of my nick is my date of birth.

Byrd666, I price shop a LOT. If I can find a good deal on something that works VERY well, I buy it and test it out. If it tests out well, we all good. If not, junk pile. In this case, practice rounds that don't make it to the ammo can. The price on that is cheaper than even Walmart. While I would like to buy a LOT of the really good ammo like Hornady, Remington, Winchester etc, it would make it harder with my income to buy a lot of ammo. If brand XYZ can get the job done and save a little money, I'm fine with it. If brand XYZ fails my testing, well, I don't buy it anymore. I keep notes on this sort of thing. I certainly keep notes on things to avoid.

I still got one more day to think on this so keep the opinions coming.

Thanks much.

The only types of handgun ammo I purchase are .32 S&W Long and .32 ACP. They are a both oddball calibers and usually costs more than 9mm or other common rounds. I got the revolver last spring from my mother. It came with two boxes of Magtech LRD that she purchased when she got the gun back in 2007. Those boxes had a price tag of $17 for 50 rounds. I bought two boxes of Magtech JHP last spring for $28 + 10% tax and paid $33 per box for CCI blazer .32 ACP !

For .32 S&W Long:
2007 Magtech LRD = $0.36 / round (Local Gun Shop)
2013 Magtech JHP = $0.62 / round (Local Gun Shop)
2014 Magtech LWC = $0.50 / round (Ammo to Go)
2014 Fiocchi LWC = $0.40 / round (Ammo to Go)
2014 Aguila LRN = $0.44 / round (SG Ammo)
2014 Prvi Partizan LRN = $0.38 / round (Midway USA)

When I purchase ammo online I purchase at least 4 boxes to spread out the $12 shipping. The ammo I purchase has come down significantly in the past year. If I was able to find it in my local shop it would be very similar to the price paid before all the hysteria started. I've buying a few boxes of each brand / type of ammo to see which one my gun likes best. Then my plan is to buy 10 boxes when I see availability and a good price or start reloading.

Prices on ammo will rise as one of the major costs involved "transportation" in other words the price of fuel is rising. The problems in the Ukraine will provide an excuse to ban shipments of imported ammo and firearms from Russia. While not really much when compared to the threat of changing the G-8 to the G-7 or other actions that are presently being considered it also would serve the administrations gun control policy.

Any ban on ammunition imports will cause the price on ammo to increase as supply is cut. Is it possible that will see another ammo shortage? I would say that there is about a 60% chance we will see one. Are people going to rush and start buying up surplus ammo and other Russian made ammo? I would say there is a very good chance that we will see such a run on ammunition. The next few days are critical. I would expect to see some kind of announcement within a few days and one of the things mentioned will be a ban on the importation of ammo and guns from Russia. Its a low value sanction, carries no weight with Russia and serves the Administrations gun control policy.

There is already a 1998 agreement between the US and Russia banning the importation of surplus ammo up to a certain age. Most of the ammo we get is from other former Soviet states. By the case, I've seen Tula 7.62x39 as low as .21 a round in the last two weeks. $209/1000.

Giving the situation its not out of the possibility that a cessation of all ammunition imports from Russia can happen in just days. This applies not only to surplus but the majority of the new production from Russia that is filling the holes in the supplies that the US ammo manufactures are unable to fill. Hopefully things do not progress to that point but it is feasible given the Administration anti gun policy and their propensity to take advantage of a crises to further their own agenda.

I was in Wally World yesterday and the Independence branded 5.56 has dropped down to $7.37 for a box of 20. I got 3 boxes.

Queen...How do you like that Tula ammo and what kind of long gun do you shoot it in? Have you ever hunted with the Tula soft or hollow points?

Thanks...Bexar

JSH1, that is some good info. While it is a different caliber, it still shows the change in prices over time. Based on that info, it would seem that prices are somewhat trying to get back to normal. At least that sounds good.

Given how things are going, plus the number of cases available is dropping pretty fast on that site, I think I'm going to order one case. Then at least I will have a fair sized supply and I can test them as well. I would assume folks would enjoy me testing this ammo and posting the info on a new thread?

This caliber was mentioned on up the thread a bit. It has been a while since I bought any of this. Can someone help me pick up my jaw please? :what:

http://ammoseek.com/ammo/22lr

A brick is how much again? $90.00 :cuss: That caliber has a VERY long way to go to get back to "normal".

Thanks again for all the info. If nothing else, it seems that they won't get cheaper in the very near future given things going on in country and out of country that could affect prices. I'm looking forward to testing it too.

This has been discussed multiple times. The lead smelter that was shut down was designed to process lead ore. The vast majority of lead used in the US comes from recycled lead. That includes lead used for ammo. In fact, there is a clay range in town that has machines that "harvest" the shot from the fields down range of the stands.
