How long did your carry permit take to complete?

Ironman615:I'm in TN also, Williamson county, and they didn't permit reloads here, either. That was a few years ago, so maybe

I don't remember anything in the Tennessee code exempting handloaded ammunition. I got my permit around 1996 or so, and nothing was said about reloads then.

Maybe the range/class rules where you qualified?

So let me get this straight, it's OK for the government to require you to submit fingerprints to carry a gun but it's an infringement on your rights to show a drivers license to vote? Really?

For those who compared fingerprinting for a job to a carry permit, where in the Constitution does it give you the right to work in a government building? It's bad enough they require a permit to avail yourself of a God given right, no reason to fingerprint you too. BTW, it was said fingerprints are harder to forge than an ID but for most people they don't have fingerprints on record so all the fingerprints prove are those prints are from the person who is there at the time, not who you really are.

Sorry to go OT...

Its only okay when Democrats run things. The rest of us don't mind showing ID at the polling booth to prevent voter fraud.

I applied for a restricted NYS carry permit, as that is what you started with and owned for several years before applying for unrestricted. I got the approval for that permit about 4 months after I moved to the south. Long and expensive process that deters and discourages legal firearm ownership.

In Iowa with a DD-214

as a veteran (probably requirement for honorable discharge but not sure) it took me about 5 minutes to be in the Sheriff's department, fill out a brief form, pay them $50 (for 5 years) and the permit was mailed to me 3 days later. To clarify, that is a concealed carry permit. No class needed. If one is not a veteran than a class is required. If one only wants a permit to acquire a handgun there is about a $15-25 fee for a permit from Sheriff's Dept and it is good for one year.

I should also mention that the permit to carry is also a permit to acquire a hand gun which is shown to the FFL at time of purchase.

My first CCW permit took 2 days,:) that was 5 years ago. My renewal for the next 5 years took all of 15 minutes.

The day I applied - when the person in charge saw where I lived she said I needed an emergency permit. The final permit took about 1 week [but I had a permit over 30 years from my previous state]. When I get a renewal it will be good for 5 years.

Tennessee

o how long did your permit take from fingerprinting to getting approved and in what state?

I don't know how long it actually took to get approved as I didn't check up on it, but the permit arrived in just under five weeks, including mailing time, from when I submitted the paperwork and fingerprints. This was over Oct. and Nov. of '13. The permit is on a plastic card, with my picture, address and a magnetic strip, similar to a driver's license, and with the same number.

Wow! Glad I read this post. I learned a lot about how other states do things. I'm going back around 20 years now so my memory could be a little off. In CT. at that time you had to take the course. Then apply for a city permit. Wait for the city permit. Then apply for a state permit. I think it took something like three months.

South Dakota, it took 10 minutes. They printed a temp permit and 3 days later I got my card in the mail.

Reading this makes me depressed.

I'm at 90 some days waiting for mine and it's been in the mail since the 27th of Feb. Can't be here soon enough.

Back in 2008, I sent my application in April and received the permit in September. This despite state law mandating a maximum of 90 days for the process. Didn't take them 5 months to cash the US Postal money order they required for payment, though.

Here in Texas, state law only applies to the residents, not the gummint. ;)

Mine took the same length of time in 2008 as well. A whole lot of people were signing up that year! ;)

14 days. 2004, Wake County, North Carolina. Good for 5 years. Renewal in 2009 was handled in one visit and mailing time for the new permit. I've had a few address changes since then, which are handled in one visit for free if you want to carry around the address change card, otherwise 15 bucks for a new permit with the updated address.

No complaints, but we have a gun-friendly sheriff in this country. By state law, the Sheriff's Dept. had 90 days to issue or deny with cause. Since then we have gotten it reduced to 30 days. Thanks, Grass Roots North Carolina

The reality is that Texas is simply not as gun friendly as its reputation might suggest.

submitted mine jan 12, received it in the mail Feb 26th. (45 days). In texas.

Had to take a 6 hour class which included the shooting test. I found it informative and am glad I took it.

One guy during the test had his rounds loaded backwards in the magazine. Apparently he isnt the first because the instructor mentioned they inspect everyones magazines make sure we have our rounds in the right way.

Similar here, it's now $20 for 5 years. Major difference in my County, once they call for a background check and you pass they hand you your permit. no reason to hold you up 5 days by mailing it, if you are safe 5 days from now you are safe today.

Usual time required to get your LTCF, 15 to 20 minutes. PA does not treat law abiding citizens like criminals and fingerprint you for no good reason.

Im in central PA and it is only about 15 min wait at the Sheriffs office

IIRC it took almost two months from when my paperwork was submitted to the day I got my permit. This was in Monroe County (Rochester area) of western NY state. But this was also in 1974. The permit also says "GOOD UNTIL REVOKED" so I've never (yet) had to renew it. But now, thanks to the scum in Albany and their so-called SAFE ACT it will have to be renewed every five years and I'm not sure what that's gonna cost. One of my sisters got her permit back in 2009 and I think at that time it was something like eight to ten months.

If you were allowed to use reloads in TN, you were fortunate. When I got my permit in the 1990s, reloads were not permitted for the practical part of the course.

All hard copy application materials back then.
It varies on the instructor if they will allow the use email or not. Several classes I checked with not only required more ammo but would not allow reloads ether. Just happened that the instructor for this class was an advid reloader too and allowed the use of reloads. If he had not allowed reloads it would have cost me another $37.95 plus tax if walmart had a box in stock for a 100 round box of Winchester 40 S&W rounds. On another note I think that the whoever is delivering my permit from Nashville is doing it on foot and traveling around 5 miles per day if that much. The website stated I would have my permit in the mail within 10 days, well today will be the 10th day and if it is not in the mail today I will be making a phone call to see where on earth it is at this moment.
