If you use non-toxic shotgun ammo for turkey, what do you use or recommend? I'll be using a 12 gauge, Mossberg 835 with a Jellyhead choke on it and I've only shot lead shot in it.

Thanks for recommendations I can try and see how it will pattern.

I've used #4 steel in the past and it worked well enough. Kills like #6 lead.

I'll give Hevi-Shot a try since I can't shoot steel through my tight choke. Thanks everyone.

That would be my choice, but you can shoot steel if you'll open up the choke a bit. A modified tube will pattern steel shot pretty tight. Especially the smaller sizes like 4's, 5's, and 6's.

The non steel non toxic stuff can get expensive.

For the life of me I don't know why anyone would want to shoot steel shot at turkeys. Duck hunters have to use it because they can't use lead and the denser than lead stuff is too expensive to shoot waterfowl with. All they do is b###h about how much it sucks and how poorly it penetrates.

For turkey hunting the denser than lead stuff is fantastic. Yeah it's expensive but it's not like we are going on a dove shoot here. If I limit out on turkeys here in Alabama that's 5 shells I will have fired. A 5 pack of Hevi-13 costs less than 1/2 a tank of gas for my truck. Why skimp on the one thing that actually kills the turkey?

Hevi-13 not only out patterns lead but out penetrates it as well. It's not just denser than lead but way harder also. That being the case I don't see any reason to use anything larger than number 6 shot in Hevi-13. 6's will hold a killing pattern farther than 4's or 5's and kill just as far as your gun will hold a dense enough pattern.

Just got back from the sporting goods store with 2 boxes of Hevi shot 13 in size 6. I'll try them out this Saturday and see how the Mossberg 835 likes them. Thanks again everyone.

That last post was funny. I live in OK & I was drawn for a bonus hunt for turkey but the area has wetlands so they require the non-toxic shot. I tried out the Hevi-Shot 13 in size 6 and it patterns just fine so will be using it for this special bonus hunt.

What MC Gunner said! Hevi Shot is made of tungsten not a polymer of tungsten! It is harder than steel and could damage a choke that is meant for lead only!
