Foxnews is reporting that letters are being sent out for real this time...

There is no example letter and I dont see this mentioned anywhere else on a thr thread. I do know about the letter from a couple weeks ago that apparently never was mailed and was in serious question as to its authenticity. Admittedly this foxnews report is brief and vague. Anyone have any additional information that it is happenning for real this time?

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/03/1...roy-banned-assault-weapons/?intcmp=latestnews

"HARTFORD, CONN. – Connecticut officials are urging owners of now-illegal assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines to relinquish them to the police or make them permanently inoperable.

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection announced Friday it had sent a letter to owners who had failed to register the items by a Jan. 1 deadline, part of last year's gun control law. Officials offered advice on what to do now with the weapons and magazines.

The letter says gun owners are in compliance with the new state law if their items are no longer in Connecticut or were sold to an authorized gun dealer.

Those who fail to comply face charges of possessing an unregistered assault weapon and/or high capacity magazine.

Commissioner Dora Schriro denied rumors DESPP is confiscating weapons."

If this is actually happening it is key to see the options offered. Notice that there isn't an option to register your gun. Those that failed to register may have missed their change to legally keep their guns.

I sure wouldn't have registered my weapons if I were unfortunate enough to live in the state of Connecticut.

This is actually a good thing if they're sending out mass letters it sets up a real showdown between a state trying to take away a class of weapons and the citizen owners of those weapons. What would have been bad for us was a war of attrition where they try and prosecute a few per year while scaring others into compliance, and eventually getting all non-registered AW's and magazines out of the state.

Kevin, unless the state of CT has sent out another letter, they mailed the letters in early Jan. A copy of the early Jan letter (dated January 2, 2014) can be found at: http://www.ammoland.com/2014/02/con...es-standard-capacity-magaznies/#axzz2uN6Yq5zo.

This was recently discussed here, but it turned into encouragement of illegal activity and other non-THR posts, so it was shut down - http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=745163.

This thread can stay if discussion remains civil, and within THR rules.

To my knowledge the letter that was linked from January was never proven authentic and no one came forward saying they had received one. If I am mistaken someone please correct. I read the 'closed' thread before its demise and it was replete with conjecture and speculation.

The article I mentioned above is from the Associated Press and was dated by Foxnews March 15th (which admittedly could be for multiple reasons). They mention the letters were sent out Friday which is vague, but I would expect given the date of the article to mean the 14th. This assumption may be wrong which is why I was looking for further information at this time and not commenting myself on the draconian nature of said action if indeed true.

Did anyone receive a letter from January or see one for themselves? If not, is this the real thing happening now since according to the article we have confirmation from a Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection official (and I must say again any government agency with the words 'public protection' in it scares the crapola out of me)? OR is this merely an old article making it's way onto Foxnews with a new date?

Same here.

i'll believe the current Fox News story when a gunowner from CT who received such a letter shows us his/her letter. Until then, it's not true.

Being a resident, I have not seen or heard ANYTHING regarding relinquishing unregistered firearms or un-declared magazines.

There has been no information sent to residents from any government agency, and there have been no reports of such on the local news networks.

I am a member of the CCDL http://ccdl.us/ and there is no mention of this "relinquishing" being mentioned there.

For the life of me, I do not understand the motive for some "rogue news" agencies to spread untruths...to many agenda's being stroked for my liking. The gun owning community as a whole is too quick to accept heresy and let their fears take over

I couldn't agree more Russ and was very suspicious of the article as it was to vague for something that would be big news in my opinion....especially to a conservative news group like Fox. Reason I was looking for a bit more information.

IF they were mailed on Friday I would expect them to have started showing up yesterday or this coming Monday. I suppose the next few days will answer as to the validity of said story.

Fox pulled this same CT notification stunt some time ago: There was no confirmation of the story by CT residents then or now. Fox has an agenda, like all the other networks. Fox News has long spread misinformation while hiding behind its "fair and balanced news" bit.

Folks who depend on one source for their news are not well informed.

Given the information presented here I've closed this. Evidently, this is all speculation, and we don't do speculation. When a CT resident gets a letter or someone else gets verifiable proof of such a letter send me or another staff member a PM with the pertinent info. Then, and only then will we re-open this thread.
