Hi. This is probably a dumb question, but here it goes. I recently received a mossberg 500a 12 gauge in a trade and it has me confused. The guy i got it from said the spread is really good out to about 70 yards, and it has a 670 xx-f turkey choke on it. Problem is, the barrel has rifling in it. The barrel is a 24 inch ported model marked 24 inch accu choke. My question is either what the hell do i have or what the hell is going on. Did the previous owner not realize the barrel was rifled and use it for a turkey gun?

also, there are 2 beads on the top of the barrel, one is a metal pin and one is a traditional round bead.

I've never seen a rifled barrel threaded for tubes. Are you 100 percent certain it is rifled? Having 2 beads on the barrel is normal for a standard barrel, not a rifled barrel. Sounds like a standard 24" gun with a turkey tube in it to me. If it really is rifled then it doesn't make any sense to me either.

Right now it is time to shoot that gun at a pattern board. That way you will know exactly how it shoots.

Might be surprised no how it patterns, use some shells with fine shot no. 8 or no.9 shot. Just like the loads used in card shooting.

My guess is that he sold it with a slug barrel but intended to sell it with a standard screw in choke barrel with a turkey choke instead. He may have forgot what barrel was on it.

Mossberg rifled barrels typically have rifled sights. The two beads is on regular Mossberg barrels, at least that I've seen.

Lets make sure you are not just seeing the screw threads at the end of the muzzle for the screw in chokes. Its possible that there isn't a choke installed. He should have given you any choke tubes that had come with the gun.

There are screw in chokes tubes with rifling for slugs. The rifling is only in the couple inches of choke tube at the muzzle of the barrel.

Thanks for all the responses. The choke is a turkey choke but the barrel has swirls in it, im assuming all the lines are rifling. I have 3 smoothbore sgs that don't have it. im not just looking at the choke threading. I've never seen something like this.

Me thinks you are seeing plastic residue/wad streaking and thinking its rifling. If you have 2 beads, thats usually an indication that its a bird barrel, not a rifle barrel.
