Well guys tomorrow is the start of the buck season. Can't wait. Even better is that I don't have work in the morning!

I will be on the ground at first light. On this ground there are also muntjac and fallow. Fallow bucks are still in season and muntjac are open all year round.

I will keep you posted.

Steve

Good luck Steve! I got eyes on a fallow deer here over the weekend, got within 40M, but i'm only allowed to take hogs, goats, and rabbits on the property.

What setup are you taking out? What kind of land will you be on? What distance would you feel comfortable taking one at?

Hi, I have permission on 2500 acres of mixed woodlands and small arable fields. There is a big pheasant shoot on the ground so in the winter the birds (and deer) are fed. I will be using an fn mauser actioned rifle with170 gr geco factory loads. They are a bonded protected point bullet. It has a sb 6x42 scope on Leopold mounts. Most shots are under 150yards but I would go out to about 230...

What are the costs for a roe hunt over there? From what I understand there is no free hunting. (It's not free here either when you consider up to $100+ for licenses, tags, etc. ;))

Steve - that's great! I have always envied GB for the variety of deer and deer shooting seasons you enjoy. I've been watching roe deer shooting all day on youtube...

Hi guys, the stalk went well and i was able to harvest this cull buck. He is the ideal animal to take pre rut . I took him from about 170 yards off sticks. I will give you a good account tomorrow.

Out again tonight, took both trainees... Daughter and Labrador. Both coming on well. This buck is a yearling shot hit on the point of the shoulder and exited just in front of the diaphragm. Dead on the spot. Sent the dog to "find the deer" soon she will be a superb blood tracker.

Interlock, what calibers are allowed for Roe Deer? I have heard 222 Remington is poplar.

In England it is any rifle with a muzzle velocity of over 2400 fps and energy over 1500ftlbs, as far as I remember. So a .243 win is the realistic minimum. In Scotland .22cf are allowed. .222 223 22-250 are popular. My rifle is a .30-06.

Please explain to this ignorant redneck what makes that deer a cull. Looks pretty good to me .. all in velvet.

cull buck

Hi Pato,
The cull buck is an animal that is not the dominant buck in a territory, it maybe that he is a yearling or two year old or one that is "going back" or past his prime. If you cull a few of these animals every year it has quite an interesting result in that the does feel some predation pressure and are believed to be more likely to have twins and the territories of the bucks appear to change to include more does. This increases densities, where food allows. If you take a dominant buck from an area before the rut it destabilizes the area and it can become a "coffee bar" area where everything is transient and the does all clear off as well. I don't really hunt for trophy heads so the fact he is in velvet is of no concern.

I hope this clears it up a little.

Steve

This doesn't happen very often. This is two parts of the bullet and some also exited even on the smaller piece some of the lead is attached to the jacket. Back in the day when I knew the theory but lacked experiences I would say it failed. Now I know it worked well. Sometimes this is what happens . uploadfromtaptalk1397026212294.jpg
