Hello everyone,
I just purchased a Win. M70 Featherweight Grade III, in 30-06 that will ship in a few days. My question is about how different "grade III" wood is from non-grade III or from "super grade." When I search for grade 3 it seems all I get are super-grade pics. What can you tell me? Any and all pics are appreciated as its all I have until mine ships!

Feel free to give an opinion on scope. I am planning an a Leupold VX2. It just seems like Win & Leopold just are a classic match. However, are the Vortex Vipers really as good as I've been reading?

I have a Win gr. III in 7x57...wood is terrific. I have a Leupy 3.5-10x40 with a Duplex reticle on it...while I like Vortex Vipers (in PST), Leupy VX3s work nicely.

I've got a 2008 Limited Edition Fwt. in .30/06. That was the first year FN built them in SC and I don't believe there was a Grade III. If the Grade IIIs are as nice as mine (and I'll bet they're nicer), you are in for a real treat. The wood is better then any standard grade rifle I've seen, but maybe not SuperGrade-level. Fit and finish are excellent, and I'm very, very happy with how mine shoots.

For a little more coin than a VX-2, you could be into a VX-3, which are better scopes, not that VX-2s are bad. I've got a 2.5-8x36 and 3.5-10x40, both B&C reticles, on SC Fwts. I like the balance of the 2.5-8x36 much better.

Old Brown Dog, I would love to see a pic of your set up. For a 100 bucks more I could get into the VX-3 8x36 and I'm quite intrigued by this. I'll bet the smaller profile looks great on the featherweight. The 4mm difference between the 36 and 40 lens is another $100. How much does it matter in terms of performance?

Here you go Babalouie. This is a VX-3 2.5-8x36 in Talley lightweight one-piece lows on my Limited Edition Fwt. If you are using this as a hunting rifle, I really don't think you'll see much benefit from a 40mm vs 36 mm objective and you'll get better handling/balance with 36.

Thanks OldBrownDog,
That's like a junkies fix for sure! I love the size of the 36 and yes its for hunting, mostly Southern whitetails and hogs. For a hundred extra bucks I get a current VX-3 for the life of the rifle. In my mind there is something iconic about Winchesters, wood, and leupolds.
