After killing many dozen wild hogs with .50 caliber muzzleloaders and saboted bullets, i've taken to shooting them with a .54 caliber TC Fire Hawk muzzleloader and patched round balls. Killed about ten wild hogs with patched round ball; most were bang flops.

That's certainly the goal of this venerable thread: identifying the best riffle & cartridge combination that'll make a hog do the "bang flop" thang all day everyday. :D

Now you got me re-thinking the .404 Jeff approach ... :scrutiny:

Guess it would simply be more efficient (i.e., less $$$ per bang) to use Grampa's "custom" Krag instead.
That old 30-40 RN slug is tried & true ... Save the .404 for Africa; why waste it on U.S. pork?

I have a couple of Hawkens in .50. The CVA Wolf is a break open 209 primed inline. I think of it more as a caseless .50-90 sharps than a primitive weapon. It's just really cool and shoots really well. It's all i need in my woods. It'll put 3 385 grain Hornady minies into 2" center to center at 100 yards. And, I love how those big blunt bullets sound when they hit....WHAP! :D But, yeah, after you've killed so many with your hunting rifles, working on points for style seems the thing to keep it interesting. :D I'll get around to the roundball thing and maybe the Ruger Old Army. :D

Hogs are a great target of opportunity. Shoot them with whatever you want to shoot them with. It's not about need, it's about fun and practice with your chosen rifle or other weapon.

They really are the equal of a .50-90 Sharps. Fall before last i was deer hunting with a TC .50 New Englander. Smacked a 200 pound boar with a 370 grain Maxi-Ball driven by 100 grains of Pyrodex. He keeled over, kicked twice and lay still.
