I have been using TAC for 223 in my AR 55/60 gr projectiles but I am
out of TAC now. Local store has W748 in stock and that's it for now,
how does w748 compare to tac. Is this a good powder for .223 and possibly
308 150 to 168 gr ?

I've found Winchester 748 to be the most accurate powder I've ever tested in the .223. I've been using it for over 30 years in that caliber. I can't help you with this powder in .308, since I've always used IMR 4895 in that caliber.

Hope this helps.

Many reloaders use W748 in the .223, it gets left behind because of all the new and "better" powders available today. If it was good 20 years ago it's still good today!

I prefer H335 but if I could only get W748 I wouldn't be stressed over it.

I load a lot of W748 in 223 and 308. Works great, a little more temp sensitive than TAC (which I have used in the past as well). It meters as well as TAC, use a Mag primer.
I run 26.0gr with 55gr VMax and Hdy SP. Shoots lights out.

I've tried most of the so-called new and better powders..
ie: TAC, 2520, 2460, BenchMark, RL10X, ect, ect.

I still prefer Win748 and BLC2..... except for a few special applications and not in the .223/5.56.

I use w748 as my primary powder for 223/556. Pretty gentle to work up, meters like water, not dirty for my ARs, but closer to the start charges the spent cases
are sooty. I've gone through a 8 pounder in 2 months. I am very happy with the accuracy and performance out to 300 yards

I just did some testing with six different powders (see here for some deatils), including W748. W748 did OK but H335 won best group for me. As we compare stories here, I like to know what equipment people used to get their results, in particular bullet info, powder weight and barrel twist rate.

Not sure about 308, but Ive had good results in 30/06, 270 and 223 with 748

Im pretty sure it's RC Models powder of choice for 223, so it's probably pretty good. RC has a bit of experience from what I hear :)

A good powder for .223/5.56 and I used it for a few years. Capable of good accuracy. Only issue with it I've seen is some published data manuals have data much too high for 55 grain bullets in hot summer temps, in some brand cases, or letting a round soak in a hot chamber. I don't get the velocity with 748 that I can with H335 with 55 grain bullets. I caution against loading higher than 26.4 grains of 748 with 55 grain .223 loads. However if I needed powder I wouldn't have any hesitation buying 748 powder.

I've used it for both and for saboted .224 projectiles in a 30-06 and it was a good powder...Wish there was some on the shelf here as it is supposed to burn cooler to help the overbore barrel burners last a bit longer

well I picked up a pound of the w748 and a box of 55gr hornady vmax now time to
hit the drawing board, might start at 24gr to 25.5 in .5 incurments and see how they
fly in my AR 1/9 twist.
its the only rifle powder I found close by.

Wouldn't load many at 24 grains. Best performance for me has been from 25.9-26.4 grains with 748 and 55 grain bullets. Actually 26.4 is my best load and has no issues.

My accuracy load for my 20" AR is 27.2gr of W748 and 52gr Hornady or 52gr Sierra hpbt match, have since dropped back to 26.8gr. Hot for summer loads if left in the sun or a hot chamber. If it works in 30.06 it should work in the 308.
