I just bought a nice old Marlin 39a made in 1961.

I would like to put a Redfield or Lyman receiver sight on it, but would like it to be period correct.

What model sight should I use?

Anyone have one for sale?

I like Skinner sights. I have one on my Henry Golden Boy, but they didn't exist in 1961.

I hope to wind up with a 39a the way it would have been equipped in 1961.

Thanks though.

In terms of a quality receiver sight being "period correct", Williams has been making their "Foolproof/5D" models for well over half a century. I have one mounted on a Marlin Model 39 (as well as on a few other rifles) and Williams peep sights have always served me well.

Lyman 66mc is the correct receiver sight for your rifle. Lyman still makes these and they can be purchased from them or Optics Planet. The newer ones are mostly made of aluminum, but look exactly like the older, all-steel versions. Vintage, all-steel versions, can often be found on Ebay and other auction sites. These usually go for well over a hundred dollars.

Give Williams a call, it`s free. 800-530-9028.

They`ll set you straight.......................

I bought a Williams 5D for my Marlin 39 D back in the 70's. It was simple and worked great and never changed zero. I had to get a higher front site. I now build my own peep sights just for the heck of it. For casual plinking and small game hunting I like very simple, low mounted, tough sights. The Williams 5D is the best commercial sight for just blasting that I know of.

Get either a Williams or a Lyman. Then get a Merit adjustable peep disc.
I have a Lyman on a 39M and a Marbles tang sight on a 1894 both have Merit adjustable peep discs in them.
