I have mine in the closet, but thought about it and perhaps putting it behind the drapes next to my bed is a better idea.
Honestly if it's more than a few seconds from you, you ate likely not going to be ale to get it fast enough if someone were in the house. It shouldn't take more than a few seconds to get to it, otherwise it's probably not going to help.

I keep mine unloaded in the gun cabinet with the rest of the guns.

I live in a reasonably safe neighborhood, so I see no reasonable reason to hide a shotgun behind the curtains at night.

That would only make it visable, and withing grasp of someone looking in the window from outside my house.

So, they might be tempted to break the window and become armed criminals instead of window peekers!

We don't want to encourage them, now do we!!!!

I have most of them locked in the gun cabinet. One is outside the cabinet without a barrel installed, the last one is locked in my truck. For the moment, the shotguns are not part of my HD plan. A couple chambered and safe 9mm pistols, though, are.

Shotguns in the safe. As others have said, there is at least one other firearm always easily to hand ... just not a shotgun.

Shot guns are a great versatile weapon. You can do almost anything with just one good stocked shotgun. Slugs for harvesting animals, birdshot for harvesting birds and buckshot for general defense. I keep mine in the safe in case an event occurs where it'll be handy. I keep a handgun loaded bedside for the emergency defense plan day and night. I usually am also carrying a handgun on me as well on and about.

Under the bed in a V-Line gun vault:

Takes a couple seconds to open, but it's faster than getting to the closet. I have 3 of the V-Line lock boxes; Benelli, nightstand pistol, and CCW, all set with the same combo. Everything else is stored in a vault.

Behind the bedroom door---a handgun real close by--as well as other handguns around the house----ALL are concealed

I live alone and I don't think the cat can work the safety and pull the trigger.

Not paranoid---just prepared.

All my guns are unloaded, individually locked in a locked gun safe in a locked room, as required by law. Ammo is also kept locked separately in a metal box. I guess you can tell I do not rely on firearms for home defence.

All my firearms are loaded and at my easy / ready access, as permitted by law.

I keep a 12 ga. Charles Daley 18.5" next to my side of the bed loaded with several 3" 00 buck, and a couple 3" slugs.

Under my pillow is a loaded snub .357 S&W 66 with a full cylinder of 158 gr. H110 & Gold Dots.

Then a couple more handguns in my nightstand drawer, XDM 40, Taurus PT111, and a Taurus 608 158 gr. Gold Dots.

On my Wife's side she usually keeps her SCCY on the nightstand covered with a small hand towel and loaded with 124 gr. Gold Dots - full tilt Longshot loads, extra mags.

Then a SB 12 ga. next to her, mag is loaded with 3" 00 buck. She has a Taurus 709 in her nightstand drawer.

We also keep several others stashed throughout the house, bathroom drawers, kitchen cabinets, and between the couch cushions. These are strategically moved and placed depending on who is coming over, or what part of the house we might spend the bulk of our time in that day, or particular time of day. I was keeping an AK47 and an AR in the walk in closet, now I slip one under my side of the bed the AR under my wife's side of the bed each night.

For most this indeed seems extreme I sure. But having had the encounters that my wife and I have had, you would very likely understand, for lack of a better term, our paranoia, I prefer to consider ourselves as just being prepared for the worst though.

You seem very well equipped. I wish you to never need all or any of it for self defense. I suppose there is a reason for our laws to differ. It is very peaceful up here. Still, I also feel adequately prepared in the event nothing happens! If something did happen, I would probably wish for a different setup, but I guess the risk assessment in my situation dictates for passive security instead (locking the door before going to bed, most of the time, ju-jutsu training in the past, weighting 235 pounds, that kind of passive...). Also, having a toddler at home, I feel he is more secure with the guns locked up (again, given the risk assessment of my own situation).

I imagine home defense preparations in SW Arizona are much different than Quebec, Canada. SW Arizona has a high rate of Mexico drug warfare bleed over, kidnappings, etc.

My answer to the OP is that I am well-prepared for home defense...

Under my dresser close to my bed in cruiser ready. Only my wife and adult children know. When grandchild or young children are over it is in the safe. (Also in safe when last for the day leaves for work). Started keeping shotguns cruiser ready a few years back and really like it.

Loaded, w/buckshot, in a locked closet. EDC on night stand beside me. I live in a very safe, friendly, old-school-kids walk in and out of friend's houses, neighborhood. And the wife won't let me keep a long gun under the bed, though she's cool with the pistol. :)

Unloaded in a walk-in closet. Two loaded handguns are always nearby. I live alone so there is always a gun somewhere near.

Most of them in the gun safe out in my "mancave" workshop steel building. A couple in the closet here in the house (Ted Williams semi-auto 20 gauge, Remington 870). Beater single-shot 12 gauge in the beater Blazer. One underneath the bed (bubba-ed 20 gauge pump: Old Hi-Standard).

I have them scattered around where their handy, not necessarily for bad guys. A good example is a 410 which is in a corner by the backdoor facing the chicken coop, it just works well there. Between the snakes and possums and coons etc etc.

One hidden in the man-cave in my basement , and one in a quick access safe in my bedroom. both with loaded magazine tubes. I keep them more for wildlife control than anything else , but if the unfortunate situation arises, they are accessible enough . I'm a LEO and have the gun within arms reach most of the time anyway. Hoping I never need to use buckshot in or near my house , but prepared just in case .
