I have recently received my first stamp for a .223 suppressor and I currently have a sub machine gun (M-11) transfer pending.

What I would like to know is how often, if ever any of you long time stamp collectors have been asked to produce documentation or proof of a stamp for any of your title 2 items? Under what circumstances?

Never, but just in case, I made a photocopy of the Form 4 and carried it with me when I had the item(s) out. The original went in the safe deposit box.

I've owned machine guns since 1975 and I've never been asked to produce the documentation. On the other hand, I don't take them to public ranges.

BTW, lots of registered MG's (and other NFA items) don't have "stamps." SOT dealers can get them tax free, using Form 3, and when they go out of business they can usually keep them without paying the tax. (But that has to be a bona fide business. You can't get an FFL and SOT just to enhance a personal collection.)

Many older folks have machineguns registered on a Form 4467 (1968 amnesty registration), which has no stamp or photo, and required no fingerprints. If applicable, I would recommend carrying a copy of that form when the gun is taken out of the house just as with a Form 4.

Exactly never, have had full auto since before the registry was closed.

But I do keep photocopies in the pocket of my range bag for all my NFA toys.

Been asked by range officers once, around the time we legalized suppressors for use. They too had no idea what to look for and stared blankly. I could show them a bank statement or coupon and get the same effect. I mainly think they wanted to gawk. People aren't going to bring illegal suppressors to a public range.

Some guy (not a range officer) asked me if I had a "Class 3 license" once and got all perturbed when I truthfully told him "no" (I don't have a SOT) :D He just got up and left

I have never been asked, but always keep a photocopy of my Form 1 or 4 with me when I go to the range. "Technically" the only person who can legally demand to see it is an ATF agent. In some states that have local restrictions/licenses/etc. I suppose the staties could ask as well. Range officers have no legal right to see your "papers", but they also don't have to let you stay on the range if you refuse. And with all of the LE types, you may beat the rap, but you won't beat the ride.

this is only true if the license is in the name of the final owner, not a corporation.usually,an owner of a corporation, has a license in his own name.
If the corporation is the licensee, the owner will not have it in his name as the corporation is a separate legal entity.
If the licensee is a sole proprietor he can keep any fully transferrables.
If the licensee is a corporation it must dispose of them to another licensee/SOT.

If you submit a form 4 via eForms you don't get a stamp. All you get is a pdf file from the ATF. I'm not sure if it includes an image of the stamp or not since I haven't seen mine yet.

"Stamp" is a misnomer anyway. I have a number of weapons I registered during the 1968 amnesty and they certainly have no stamp. Also I was an FFL/SOT for a number of years, and weapons transferred to me during that time on a Form 4 have no stamp. The transfers since then on a Form 4 are the only stamped forms I have.

All the time by ignorant range officers who have not a clue what they are looking at.

Same here, always at my local Gun Club and even the ones that are further away. In fact, I only know of one shooting range in my area that is open to the general public that doesn't give a rat's gleuts about checking your stamp.

If they're not being jerks, I'll take the opportunity to inform them about what they're looking at. After that. they usually have a few questions about how to own NFA items. Most of those people are just doing the job that the Range has asked them to do.

When it comes to showing the stamps, so long as they're not making photocopies of it (with my address all over the Form), I don't care all that much.

You have a dramatically different experiance than the rest of us. Do they check your vehicle registration in the range parking lot? ;)

Mike

I've never had anyone ask to see any of my info, I do bring photocopies with me just in case. I typically shoot at home though. I did have a RO get a little confused about my Mac11 one time. "Open bolt means it's ready to fire? That just can't be."

Their Range, Their Rules.

Local ranges want to know that you're legal, plain and simple. Whether or not that's their legal authority doesn't really matter, and it's the subject of an entirely different discussion. If it's private property, they can ask whatever they want of the shooters on the line. People who play the part of the tough guy get kicked out and don't get to shoot. It's a pretty simple choice, especially when shooting in your backyard isn't an option.

*Note, Ironman and I both live in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.*

Of course but I wonder if they even know what they are looking for (there have been so many versions of the forms and as pointed out above non-stamp forms). They may also be customers who are SOTs and don't have stamps. Would they want to see a demo letter?
