I came across an ad for upgrading an AK trigger a while back and read about single and double hook trigger.

Other than the obvious...that one has 1 and the other has 2 hooks...is there an advantage or preference of one over the other?

Thanks

If your receiver is cut for a single hook you need a single hook or its a lot more work to replace. Double hook has some redundancy but single hook generally has a bit better pull.

I generally put double hook triggers in receivers cut for double hook triggers.

My preference is clearly for the one that matches your receiver cuts.

The original AK design was the double hook trigger. The single hook was introduced to make room for the anti-bounce/rate reducer that takes the place of the right hand hook on a full auto AK.

I've never noticed any problem or better feel either way.

I've never looked that close at my AK to see what I have...all that was available when I bought them was the Romanian SAR-1 and SAR-2.

Now that I have the AR pretty much up to speed, I thought I'd turn my attention to the AKs I have just sitting around

As others have said there's not really any functional difference between a single and double hook AK trigger although not every receiver is cut to take a double hook. As for upgrading the trigger the Tapco G2 is very popular and is a light trigger with a short pull. I have an Arsenal 2 stage trigger in my AK and I like that a little better but it does lengthen the pull a bit and it feels a a little heavier, although that could just be me. If you really want to play with it get a Red Star Arms trigger, they're adjustable.

Spot on with the change to a single hook to accommodate FA internals.

Supposedly, single hook triggers can cause "painful trigger slap", but I haven't seen that issue with the dozen or so that I've fired (in 7.62, 5.45, and 5.56).

I try to use double hook triggers in my AK's. Some of them might have started life as a single hook setup but it is relatively simple to make the changes to install a double hook. I bought a bunch of the gordon tech G2 double hook FCG sets (before tapco bought the rights to the G2 from gordon tech) and I use those.

Some may prefer the single hook, but for me I prefer the double hook setup. Almost like a ford versus chevy debate. :D

I've always heard that the double hook has a more even pull because of it being more evenly balanced. I've never shot a single hook though, so I can't compare it.

Given the state of most AK triggers you could run a 1/2 hook and not feel the difference.

I can't compare, but liked the double-hook G2 I put in my Saiga.
I got it because it was in stock. The single wasn't. So, presto.
The receiver was also cut for a single-hook. I decided to alter the right hook, not the receiver; I cut the 'elbow' of the hook more narrow. Call it half-redundancy. Worked perfectly fine, just needed a few trims before it moved freely and was ready to clean, refinish, and install.

I had to replace the trigger in my M92 PAP conversion (SBR) for 922(r) reasons. I initially used the single hook trigger, but I didn't like the hole it left in the bottom of the receiver. I switched to the double hook and I think it looks much better and has less potential to let undesirables into the trigger group. I know, I know, it's an AK, but still...
