Have the chance to buy some powder tomorrow. Looking for a good powder for a colt 45 cowboy loads 200 to 230gr lswc and lrn. Have been using bullseye but not a lot load data.
Maybe two or three powder choices as I have no clue what may be in stock.
Thanx

I have tried a lot of powders in the 45 Colt and it seems the cartridge is not very picky. I was using W231 for a long time until I tried HS-6 and that's my current favorite.

Red Dot is also very good.
AA#5 is also a good choice.
Don't forget Trail Boss for low velocity Cowboy loads.
Unique and Universal are the standbys.
Herco also makes a good 45 Colt load.

With all those choices you should be able to find plenty of powder for the 45 Colt.

The .45 Colt is a very easy cartridge to load for. 6.0 grains of any powder suitable for 12 gauge target loads will get you a nice, soft-shooting load.

Depending on what your shooting it thru? TrailBoss is the easiest and safest powder to use. If all you are doing is cowboy shooting, its the best alternative.

It fills the case volume. I use 5.0gr of TrailBoss (middle load) with a 250gr LRNFP MB. I use the same load in my SAA and my Lever Action both in .45LC.:D

Trailboss is intended for exactly that, and fills the case enough to let you easily see it before placing a bullet.

Add my voice to the trail boss chorus. 45 Colt is an easy calibre to load that shoots well with most powders, but that cavernous case can easily accommodate a double charge of ANY of the fast burning powders. NOT so with trail boss which is very bulky and makes it virtually impossible to double charge. With mild cowboy loads the venerable old Colt is a "shoot all day" cartridge and cleans up well too.

Accurate #2. Meters good, isn't position sensitive and has the load data you are looking for. All of the shotgun powders mentioned will work but AA#2 will meter in any quantity in any powder thrower.

Trail boss always has been a one trick pony. The only thing it offers is the inability to double charge a load. Fast pistol powders are far more versatile and 100% safe when used in conjunction with published load data.

I'm fixing to try green dot as I have some older loading data for using green dot on 200gr and 250gr bullets and gonna try this in my new rossi circuit judge carbine with 18.5in barrel so has anyone tried green dot powder and what did you experience??

Green Dot works very well for .45 Colt, as does Unique. Herco for the heavier bullets also works well. Red Dot/Promo for the lighter projectiles.

Red Dot will do anything Bullseye will do. In some cases it will also replace #231/ HP38 too.It is my do everything powder.I have used it in everything up to and including light loads in my 44 Magnum.

Promo, because it's cheaper than Red Dot and you're probably going to be loading a lot of them.

Green Dot and American Select are also good. Unique for full-power loads. Herco or Blue Dot for grizzly-stomper loads with cast bullets.

Personally, I'm all about the Black Powder loads. Cleaning the guns and brass after shooting is part of the routine anyways.

An old guy I know used to say 6gr of Red Dot behind 250gr of lead was The Load way back in the day. Back in the day would be 50's and 60's. Funny, he told me that a very long time ago, and I still remember it. It is a good load, but listed as max in one of my Alliant manuals.

Unique is a good powder as well.

So, what powder did you buy? Myself, I prefer the 45 long Colt with blackpowder, 2f or 3f. Or a load of Unique that duplicates those ballistics.
