has the old 30/30 died or dying?

I own a couple of 94s and a 64. The 94s have never been fired by me and the 64 (32 Win Sp) hasn't been shot since the 1960s. I have too many other rifles that do the job better. A 760 is more effective for me for short range.

It's hardly an 'ideal' cartridge for deer; there's probably not a single thing it does that couldn't be done better by another round.
In many parts of the country it most certainly is about "ideal" and for those places where 50 to 100 yard shots are the norm and you can't see 150 yards for the trees there isn't a cartridge that will do any better.

My old "thutty-thutty" was used in the 1914 Mexican Revolution. No finish left, but surprisingly it is a solid little rifle with a strong bore. Still a decent shooter.
