On Saturday, with Orest's permission, I shot the Garand I'll be returning to the CMP (smoothbore).
I put 72 rounds through it, and it seemed like each one (execpt for the very last, with the clip flying... and also except those that failed to feed) ejected at about 1 o'clock and slightly IN FRONT OF ME.
Is this the right place for ejected brass to fly?

Well that's where the brass from *my* M1 goes. I always figured that Big John designed it that way so you could shoot left-handed and not get brass in your nose.

But who cares about that? I want to know how the thing shoots!!

That's approximately correct. The ejected cases are actually struck by the hump on the op rod as the bolt and op rod return to battery. Pretty cool, huh? (I think so -- I wouldn't have thought that the case was hanging out there in space waiting to be knocked forward.) You should eventually notice a shiney brass spot on the op rod from this collision.

Intriguing

Wow.
Now, that's a cool piece of information. I certainly don't doubt you, but I'd be curious to know how you figured that out. You're not Doc Edgerton in disguise, are you?

M1 ejection

From what I've read, the tension of the extracter spring and the finish of the extracter itself affect the ejection. Mine throws the brass out between 1:00 and 3:00 and aruond 3 feet away.

Poorly.
Out of 72 rounds fired, it hit the paper 9 times.
This was a target about 18-inches across, with a black, ringed circle inside. Probably about 60-yards away.
I''m not a target shooter, so I don''t know if that''s "standard" or not. I usually just go out to the country and shoot at cans, and stuff.
Where we were Saturday, (in the desert near Ocotillo, CA), there weren''t any cans, or any very good garbage otherwise to shoot at.
Anyway, I think it did poorly, with reference to accuracy. With reference to fun, hoo-boy, what a kick to shoot!
It was kind of a drag, though, hunting in the sand for that one clip each time it went "Ping!"
I understand J&G sales has Garand clips for about 50-cents a pop. They may soon be getting an order from me. Depends on how soon I get the Garand back from returning it to the CMP.

APOLOGIES TO TOM CLANCY

It would probably do fine if I were caught in a shoot-out in an elevator. Unless it JAMMED again.

A Garand in good condition should throw brass at 1 to 2. As it gets dirty or dries up, the brass will move back towards 3-4.

For Ammo try Centerfire arms.. here's there website http://www.centerfiresystems.com/ ... Free shipping, Can and bandoleers and clips... they say the brass is reloadable but I haven't tried yet.... still gearing up for loading 30-06. (Any recomendations?) May be corrosive I can't remember. I shot it, accuracy was good enough

At 60 yards you should have had a nice tight group. Sounds like the sights are off or maybe you need shooting lessons. :)

I've made hits at 400+ yards with an M1, they're solid shooters. And yes they throw brass right-forward.

When I was in the Navy we were doing 1000 yd competitions with the Garand, open sights. The Garand is an amazing weapon. Helps to be able to shoot too.

Smoothbore rifles usually don't give a really tight group, or pattern should I say do they?

you know, i'm sorta thinking that you should keep that thing as is - pair it with a rifled musket and put it on your mantle ;)
