You have to figure out what is the best for you.
The 3913 and 3914 are excellent guns as far as quality goes, but how are you at flipping a slide mounted safety up? If you like that then great, the 3913 may be the best single stack for you.

I went with the shield in 9 but my P239 is a "better" gun. Just not a 9, a 40/.357. A little on the large side for me for EDC but mote accurate and pretty. No failures ever in either to date related to the gun. They are in the rotation along with a pair of .380s: P230 and an M&P BG.

The Smith & Wesson 639 or 3906. These are incredible values. With all steel 1911s (few of which are ultra-reliable out of the box) going for nearly a grand or more, getting an all-stainless steel auto that is ultra-reliable, is an incredible value. I actually wanted a 639 with wood grips, but never found one.

Very few people actually walk around with the safety on, remember. It's got a wonderful hammer block safety and most people carry it with the gun safety off. In fact, leaving it on and carrying it is a good way of ending up dead. That said, I can pop that safety off in an instant. They could have just as easily left it off the gun entirely. Same thing is true of the military Beretta. Taurus offers the best of all possible worlds by putting a cock-and-lock safety on its Beretta-style 9mm. My stainless Taurus also is as good as any Beretta I've ever owned.C0untZer0 said:

Where is your proof? If true, why are M1911s more popular than ever? Why are there so many manufacturers entering this market if the design is so unreliable? Why has the design stayed relatively the same for 100+ years if it is inherently unreliable?

I unfortunately, don't have any experience other than the one single stack 9mm I currently carry.
Before the Kahr PM9 came out, Kahr had a P9 Covert available. It has a 3" bbl but the same grip length as a PM9, which is about 1/2" shorter than a standard P9.
A flush fit 6 round mag make the gun very concealable
Side by side with Glock 32
Grip fits perfectly.

Gonna infuriate some folks, but I'm quite fond of my R51; it's done alright enough by me so far. My only second thoughts are in regards to longevity, but the gun as it stands currently is pretty much my ideal sidearm (a few minor design tweaks, trigger job, and integrated laser sight activated by the grip safety would be my only changes. Better initial build quality would have been nicer, but I'd be paying a lot more for probably not much improvement)

T'anks; those Agarita Burl grips I made are just showy enough to throw people off track about the R51 they'd otherwise start complaining about upon first glance 
. Not a 'nice' gun by any means, but a functional one (in my case, anyway), and one that matches my needs exactly.

well I initially said the P239 DAK, but after spending more time with the Kahr MK9 and the K9 I'm rethinking my selection.
The K9 fits just great and the MK9 is so small but such a nice shooter. I'm liking the Kahr trigger more and more. Very smooth but it is very long.

I love my 3953. No safety, no decocking. It cost $300 . The factory magazines I bought for it cost $35-$40 a piece, spoiling the economy of it all but I still love the gun. I call it "the poor mans DAK" . To me its ergonomically perfect, roughly the same length as my G26. I think a local Cop traded it in for a Glock. His loss, my gain ! The only down side is the magazines and spare parts are drying up. You wont regret a third Gen S&W !

In my opinion, for me, I'll take a commander sized 1911 in 9mm. Either a colt, springer or STI.
But I'm one of those weirdos carrying a full sized or 4" 1911 everyday. The weight doesn't bother me yet.
I had an xds and a 9mm Kahr single stack but I just flat out shoot a 1911 way better. I could remedy that with practice but I enjoy shooting 1911s better. After a thousand rounds or so I asked myself why I was shooting and carrying something that I didn't particularly like AS MUCH as something else.
I have absolutely zero bad things to say about the xds or Kahr. Both were great. It boils down to your preference and what you're willing to live with.

I was in the same predicament last year, then I found 2 in the same week! Also a 439 (though I'll admit, it's a beater of a 439). I also have a 3904, a 39, and a couple of 39-2's. I'd love to get my mitts on a 3906 though. .
I have a real affection for S&W autos. Well made, but inexpensive. Complicated but somehow also simple.
