Hi All,

Would like your opinions on a Universal M1 Carbine I have my eye on.

First off Let's not have the thread hijacked by the old firing out of battery argument the universals are known to maybe have. ;)

The one I am looking at is in the 37XXX S/N range which means it was a first generation Universal. Mostly true M1 parts, in fact likely almost all true GI M1 Parts with that low a serial number. (Correct me if you think I might be in error) Best info is its the 2nd gen that had the out of battery and other issues.

Based on what I can tell looking at gunvalues and gunripoff (I mean gunbrk ). The price point is very reasonable in the $450 range. And is a private sale.
From the picts I have it looks to be in great shape. (May try to post them in a bit. Need to transfer!)

SO, 1. The first gen with true M1 parts likely didn't have the out of battery issues, right? (A yes or no is sufficient! Like i said no need to rehash the argument.)
2. Price sound about right?
3. Other thoughts or considerations?

I'm looking at this for an armed forces shoot the range I belong to does every year a couple of times.
Considering its hard to touch the real GI M1's these days without a bunch of cash figured this would be a possible compromise.

Looking forward to your replies.

OK Picts.....

BTW its the one on the top in the first photo....

I had a USGI parts first gen Universal, it was a great rifle. All the bad press on the Universals comes from the 2nd, 3rd gen rifles and few folk even know the 1st gen existed.

Little bit of both. The club sponsors it so not something official.
Still waiting for some info back from other club members. Still somewhat new to the club.

That is a decent carbine for the intended club purpose.
I would think the price should be in the $300-350 range if it is in very good shape.
It may have many USGI parts, some of which may be very worn, but it is still a Universal.

I had a 1st gen Universal for many years. Wish I still had it. It was every bit the equal of my GI carbines. The price seems reasonable to me considering the current cost of GI guns.

I agree with garyhan. The first generation is good iron, with few problems. Later versions were badly degraded by 'value analysis', which has ruined many good designs.

Buy the gun; shoot it often! reloading the .30 carbine round is easy - but pay attention to OAL & charge weight; no hot loads, pls.

If it's just an informal shoot the carbine you are looking at is fine. A CMP match will require a carbine with a receiver that was built 42-45 and USGI issue. Look at the rules here.

http://www.thecmp.org/Competitions/CMPGamesRules.pdf

5.2 Special Military Rifles
5.2.1 As-Issued M1 Carbine
The firearm must be a U. S. M1 or M1A1 Carbine chambered for the Caliber
.30 Carbine cartridge that was issued by the U.S. Armed Forces,
manufactured by Inland, IBM, Irwin-Pedersen, National Postal Meter, Quality
Hardware, Rock-Ola, Saginaw Steering Gear, Standard Products,
Underwood or Winchester.

I've just recently started shooting an M1 carbine and trying to become proficient enough to enter a match. No electronics with an M1.

Good luck in your competition.

Thanks for the info.
Good info CoalTrain, Will check the link for more info.
Ambi, I am one of those that would prefer a non-hot load anyway! The specs are there for a reason though it always seems someone has to be pushing the limits.

Price is about right, considering a USGI model will bring $700-900. First gen Universals will often have a brand new barrel and they also used a very good quality forged receiver.
